Six tribal governments — including three from Alaska — are suing the Trump administration in order to prevent Alaska Native corporations from cashing in on the $8 billion coronavirus relief fund.
The complaint was filed in federal court in the District of Columbia. The plaintiffs are:
- Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation (Washington)
- Tulalip Tribes (Washington)
- Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians (Maine)
- Akiak Native Community (Alaska)
- Asa’carsarmiut Tribe (Alaska)
- Aleut Community of St. Paul Island (Alaska)
The six tribal governments name Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin as the defendant. Under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, also known as the CARES Act, the Department of the Treasury is the agency that will deposit the funds from the $8 billion fund into the bank accounts of eligible entities.
