On April 7, 2020, the New Mexico Department of Health released alarming data about the spread of the coronavirus among Pueblo tribes in the state.
According to the state, COVID-19 clusters have been identified among the Pueblo of San Felipe and the Pueblo of Zia. Both communities are in Sandoval County, where a large number of positive cases have emerged in the last few days.
“State health officials are working with tribal officials to contain the spread of COVID-19 and provide care to those who have tested positive,” the department said.
According to the state, 52 people at San Felipe have tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. About 2,200 people in the community, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The situation appears to be more dire at Zia. A whopping 31 people, representing more than 3 percent of the tribe, have contracted COVID-19, according to the data.
