Photo courtesy Din\u00e9 College<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Navajo Nation mourns passing of tribal college leader Charles &#8216;Monty&#8217; Roessel<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, January 6, 2025<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navajo-nsn.gov\/\">Navajo Nation<\/a> is mourning the loss of Dr. Charles \u201cMonty\u201d Roessel, who was the leader of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinecollege.edu\">Din\u00e9 College<\/a>, a tribal university on the largest reservation in the United States.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nRoessel passed away early Monday morning after a long illness, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresidentNygren\/\">Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren<\/a>. He was surrounded by family while in hospice care in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the tribal president said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Despite his illness, Dr. Roessel continued to valiantly lead Din\u00e9 College, where he was the beloved 18th president since 2017,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BuuVanNygren\/status\/1876333691041194353\">Nygren said in a post<\/a> on social media. &#8220;He followed in the footsteps of his father, Dr. Robert Roessel, the college\u2019s first president from 1968 to 1969.&#8221;\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navajonationcouncil.org\/\">Navajo Nation Council<\/a> Speaker Crystalyne Curley relayed the condolences of the tribe&#8217;s legislative body. She credited Roessel, who was 63 years old,  for leading Din\u00e9 College, headquartered in Tsaile, Arizona, during a   period of  significant change.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cDr. Roessel was a tireless advocate for tribal education and a visionary leader whose work\r\ntransformed Din\u00e9 College from a two-year institution to a four-year university,\u201d    \r\n  Curley said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/06\/navajonationcouncil010625.pdf\">news release<\/a>. \u201cHis leadership and dedication were pivotal in shaping educational opportunities for Navajo students, and his efforts have left an indelible mark on the future of our people.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FPresidentNygren%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02Qk5kQdgHU1ek8L47RKgMSfP2T3Damt61ytN5hZGUy9q4sAVueiou65MQmjAaGS3fl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"734\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n Din\u00e9 College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinecollege.edu\/dine-college-honors-the-legacy-of-dr-charles-monty-roessel\/\">announced Roessel&#8217;s passing<\/a> on Monday morning. The institution, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinecollege.edu\/about_dc\/locations\/\">operates campuses and microsites<\/a> in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah,  has  enacted a soft closure as the community mourns the loss of the president.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cDr. Roessel\u2019s leadership was transformative. He elevated opportunities for Din\u00e9 College students while creating pathways that connected education to the broader goals of the Navajo Nation,\u201d said Theresa Hatathlie, the chair of the Din\u00e9 College Board of Regents. \u201cHe left an indelible impact on our institution and on tribal colleges across the country.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBefore joining Din\u00e9 College, Roessel   served as director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie.edu\">Bureau of Indian Education<\/a>, a federal agency.
