Deb Haaland<\/a> (D-New Mexico) finally got her <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/02\/23\/hearing-to-consider-the-nomination-of-the-honorable-debra-haaland-to-be-the-secretary-of-the-interior\/\" title=\"Hearing to Consider the Nomination of the Honorable Debra Haaland to be the Secretary of the Interior\">confirmation hearing to be Secretary of the Interior<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nHaaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, spoke in the Keres language, acknowledged the nation&#8217;s capital as the homelands of the Nakochtank, Anacostan and Piscataway peoples and responded to numerous questions about the Biden administration&#8217;s priorities should be confirmed to lead the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a> at the hearing on Tuesday. \r\n<P><\/p>\r\n&#8220;If an Indigenous woman from humble beginnings can be confirmed as Secretary of the Interior, our country holds promise for everyone,&#8221; Haaland said in her <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/02\/23\/im-ready-to-serve-deb-haaland-debforinterior\/>opening statement<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Thank you, to my friend\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/repdonyoung?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepDonYoung<\/a> for introducing me at my confirmation hearing. Conditions at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie.edu\/\">Bureau of Indian Education<\/a> schools, the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and the need to protect sacred sites and tribal cultural patrimony were some of the topics discussed.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nMost of the questions posed by Republican committee members centered on energy development on federal lands, a significant area at Interior. The objections were raised in light of  President Joe Biden&#8217;s temporary pause on new oil and gas leases on federal lands and an off-shore public waters.   \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nOn the Democratic\/Independent side of the committee, Haaland interacted with, in order:\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia), Chairman<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Washington)<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont)<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon)<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico)<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii)<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Angus King (I-Maine)<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada)<BR>\r\n&#8226; Sen. John Hickenlooper   (D-Colorado)\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe only Democrat who did not speak on Tuesday was Sen.
