Photo courtesy the Kiowa Tribe\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Oklahoma tribe volunteers pass out food boxes, supplies amid harsh winter weather<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, February 22, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By Nancy Spears<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Gaylord News<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source-links\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gaylordnews.net\/\">gaylordnews.net<\/a><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nCARNEGIE, Oklahoma -\u2013 Oklahoma\u2019s Kiowa Tribe is moving to expand emergency assistance efforts for tribal members as severe weather conditions are now only beginning to abate.<p><\/p>\r\nThe tribe is offering free firewood, and households with tribal elders are the first priority.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe are monitoring the storm and doing the best we can to get help to those most in need. Photo courtesy the Kiowa Tribe\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn sub-freezing weather conditions, more than 20 Kiowa tribal employees volunteered on the frigid plains of the Kiowa Dance and Activity grounds to hand out food boxes to anyone who showed up on February 12.<p><\/p>\r\nThe bitter cold didn\u2019t deter those in need from showing up, and more than 45,000 pounds of food was distributed to tribal members and non-Native recipients, despite a two-hour delay when the food truck got held up in Tulsa due to the weather.<p><\/p>\r\nGlenn Powell, a non-Native, drove the first car in line. He said <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19<\/a> is no joke.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI lost my job and everything, needing money and food.\u201d<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nPowell said he was so grateful that he would be able to put something on his table.<p><\/p>\r\nAhnawake Toyekoyah never took a break to warm up as she braved the wind to direct the two lanes of traffic.<p><\/p>\r\nThe food box giveaway was part of a Farmers to Family and USDA grant received by the tribe. A community grant serves everyone, which is why tribal and non-tribal members were served, according to the news release. Cars were lined up for about four miles, and about 1,350 boxes of food &#8212; containing dairy, protein, vegetables and fruit &#8212; were handed out.<p><\/p>\r\nDarin Zotigh, director of the Administration on Aging for the tribe, was another volunteer. He had icicles on his eyebrows because it was so frigid.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cEven though it was cold outside, I had a warm feeling in my heart.
