Brian Schatz<\/a> (D-Hawaii) and <a href=https:\/\/www.murkowski.senate.gov\/>Sen. Lisa Murkowski<\/a>  (R-Alaska) were formally selected as the new chair and  new vice chair, respectively, at the <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/02\/10\/senate-committee-on-indian-affairs-meets-under-new-leadership\/>organizational gathering<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe committee typically convenes every Wednesday afternoon, Eastern time. During prior sessions of Congress,  members took part in <a href=https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\/hearings>oversight hearings, legislative hearings and business meetings<\/a> almost every week when lawmakers were in Washington, D.C.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nFor the 117th Congress, the committee is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. Democrats have the upper hand in the Senate, due to Vice President Kamala Harris&#8217;s role as president in the chamber.\r\n<P><\/P><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nOn the Democratic side, the committee consists of six members:\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8226; <a href=https:\/\/www.schatz.senate.gov\/>Sen. No one from California, which is home to the largest population of American Indians and Alaska Natives and more than 100 tribes, is on the panel either.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\/hearing\/oversight-hearing-call-action-native-communities-priorities-focus-117th-congress>oversight hearing<\/a> takes place at 2:30pm Eastern in Room 628 of the Senate Dirksen Office Building.
