Teresa Leger Fern\u00e1ndez<\/a> (D-New Mexico) was announced as chair of the subcommittee on Wednesday. She will be working with <a href=\"https:\/\/grijalva.house.gov\/\">Rep. Her 3rd Congressional District in New Mexico includes the Navajo Nation, the Jicarilla Apache Tribe and several Pueblo tribes.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cIn New Mexico, we have a deep respect for our history and our 23 federally recognized tribes who have shared with me their wisdom, challenges and vision during my three decades of work with them,\u201d said Fern\u00e1ndez, who worked for tribes when she was an attorney in private practice.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cI look forward to putting this experience to work for all of the Indigenous peoples of the United States,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez continued.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nDemocrats created the <a href=https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/subcommittees\/subcommittee-for-indigenous-peoples-of-the-united-states>House Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States<\/a> during the 116th Congress to focus on issues affecting American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and Indigenous peoples from various U.S. territories. The first chair was  <a href=https:\/\/rubengallego.house.gov\/>Rep. Ruben Gallego<\/a> (D-Arizona).\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe must build on Chairman Grijalva and former Subcommittee Chair Congressman Gallego\u2019s work to promote economic development and improve access to quality health care, broadband, education, child care and much more,\u201d Fern\u00e1ndez said on Wednesday.\r\n<P><\/P><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nOn the staffing front, two citizens of the    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tonation-nsn.gov\/\">Tohono O&#8217;odham Nation<\/a> are serving in prominent roles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/naomi-miguel-mpa-mpp\/\">Naomi Miguel<\/a> has been named staff director for the subcommittee  and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ariana-romeo-70a009116\/\">Ariana Romeo<\/a>  was promoted to professional staffer.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nIn other developments, <a href=\"https:\/\/chuygarcia.house.gov\/\">Rep. Jes\u00fas \u201cChuy\u201d Garc\u00eda<\/a> (D-Illinois) is the new vice chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources. He succeeds <a href=https:\/\/haaland.house.gov\/>Rep.
