Photo: <a href=https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/ianloic\/3540734599\/>Ian McKellar<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">New Mexico Indian Affairs Department presents budget request<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Tuesday, February 9, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iad.state.nm.us\/\">New Mexico Indian Affairs Department<\/a> is presenting its fiscal year 2022 budget request  to state lawmakers on Tuesday afternoon.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe request recommends keeping the department&#8217;s operating budget at the current level of funding in order to continue efforts with the 23 tribal nations in New Mexico.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.state.nm.us\/our-leadership\/department-of-indian-affairs\/\">Secretary Lynn Trujillo<\/a> said $3.7 million will be used for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iad.state.nm.us\/policy-and-legislation\/programs-and-funding\/\">special project grants, early childhood education grants  and tobacco cessation and prevention grants<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe Indian Affairs Department continues to work collaboratively with our sister agencies and tribal governments to bring resources and support to our tribal communities and people,\u201d\r\nsaid     Trujillo, who is a citizen of the Pueblo of Sandia. \r\n<P><\/p>\r\n \u201cI remain hopeful that the New Mexico Legislature will agree with the executive recommendation from DFA (Department of Finance and Administration) and maintain our budget for FY22,\u201d said     Trujillo, who also has ancestry from the Pueblo of Acoma and the Pueblo of Taos.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-pdfemb-pdf-embedder-viewer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/09\/HAFCageFeb09.21.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\" data-toolbar=\"both\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"on\">HAFCageFeb09.21<\/a><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe hearing takes place at 1:30 PM Mountain Time before the  <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/09\/HAFCageFeb09.21.pdf\">House Appropriations and Finance Committee<\/a>. Participants can join via Zoom at <a href=https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/j\/87166668598>https:\/\/us02web.zoom.us\/j\/87166668598<\/a>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nNew Mexico is home to <a href=https:\/\/www.iad.state.nm.us\/pueblo-tribes-and-nations\/pueblos\/>19 Pueblo tribes<\/a>, the <a href=https:\/\/www.iad.state.nm.us\/pueblo-tribes-and-nations\/navajo\/>Navajo Nation<\/a> and <a href=https:\/\/www.iad.state.nm.us\/pueblo-tribes-and-nations\/apaches\/>three Apache tribes<\/a>. The state celebrated their contributions during American Indian Day last week.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe tradition of honoring New Mexico&#8217;s 23 tribes, nations, and pueblos during the legislative session goes back several years,\u201d Truillo said in a statement on February 5. \u201cThanks to the late-Senator John Pinto, our state continues to recognize the tremendous contributions of native people. Indian Day has always focused on the recognition of the inherent sovereign status of tribal governments. And through this recognition, the need to continually renew and strengthen government-to-government collaboration.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\n\u201cToday&#8217;s Indian Day celebration is bittersweet,\u201d Trujillo continued. \u201cWhile more and more people are receiving the vaccine, we look back at a year in which every family and community lost people to the COVID virus. It was a year in which we all had to make sacrifices in order to slow the spread and mitigate the epidemic. The toll that this public health crisis has taken on our tribal communities has been immense.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThrough it all, we have remained strong and resilient as native people and as New Mexicans. The lessons passed down from our ancestors continue to guide us and fortify us,\u201d Trujillo added. \u201cOur people, New Mexico&#8217;s first citizens, preserve centuries-old traditions.
