Photo: White House\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Federal prosecutors label Cowboys for Trump figure &#8216;racist&#8217; for attacks on Native and Black people<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Tuesday, January 19, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By Acee Agoyo<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nWASHINGTON, D.C. &#8212;  A Republican county official who <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/indianz\/status\/1349380856746561536>participated in the violence on the U.S. Capitol<\/a> is being labeled a \u201cracist\u201d by federal prosecutors for his attacks on Native and Black people.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-dc\/pr\/new-mexico-county-commissioner-charged-breaching-us-capitol>Couy Griffin<\/a> disrespected a traditional Native blessing and suggested Black athletes should \u201cgo back to Africa,&#8221; a <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20\/04518274377.pdf>memorandum filed in federal court<\/a> on Tuesday reads. His \u201cthreatening\u201d activity on social media even got him <a href=https:\/\/mescaleroapachetribe.com\/13076\/mescalero-bans-couy-griffin-from-reservation\/>banned by the  Mescalero Apache Tribe<\/a>, government attorneys noted.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe defendant is the founder and leader of a political committee called, &#8216;Cowboys for Trump,&#8217; on whose behalf he has engaged in inflammatory, racist, and at least borderline threatening advocacy,\u201d the <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20\/04518274377.pdf>11-page document<\/a> reads.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-pdfemb-pdf-embedder-viewer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20\/04518274377.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\" data-toolbar=\"both\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"on\">04518274377<\/a><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLast September, Griffin posted two videos   that landed him in trouble with the Mescalero Apache Tribe, whose homelands are located in southern New Mexico. The second  was  titled  \u201cCowboys and Indians\u201d  and it showed  him laughing at an  Apache blessing as a second person makes a joke about Democrats.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cAs a result of this incident, the nearby Mescalero Apache Tribe banned the defendant from entering its tribal lands,\u201d federal prosecutors in the nation&#8217;s capital noted.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe ban occurred   the videos were posted to on the \u201cCowboys for Trump\u201d social media page. At the time,  Mescalero Apache  President Gabe Aguilar said Griffin, who serves as an <a href=https:\/\/co.otero.nm.us\/280\/Couy-Griffin>elected official in Otero County<\/a>,  was spreading misinformation about his people, including an elder.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt\u2019s bad enough that he posted that first video. This second video is offensive,\u201d\r\n<a href=https:\/\/mescaleroapachetribe.com\/13076\/mescalero-bans-couy-griffin-from-reservation\/>Aguilar said in explaining<\/a> the tribe&#8217;s stance. \u201cTribal blessings are not comical and are not to be used to make political statements.\u201d  \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After being banned by Mescalero Apache Tribe, Republican county official Couy Griffin admitted he didn&#39;t know anything about the tribe&#39;s sovereignty. After the January 6 attack, during which five people lost their lives, including a police officer,  he posted another  \u201cCowboys for Trump\u201d video  in which he said going to show up for the inauguration of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn the video, which prosecutors said has since been deleted,   he hinted of further bloodshed,, the kind that prompted the <a href=https:\/\/mescaleroapachetribe.com\/13793\/mescalero-apache-tribe-on-alert\/>Mescalero Apache Tribe to go on \u201cheightened alert\u201d<\/a> after the violence in Washington, D.C.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cYou know, and if we do, then it\u2019s gonna be a sad day, because there\u2019s gonna be blood running out of that building,\u201d Griffin said in reference to the U.S. Capitol, where Biden will be sworn into office as the 46th president of the United States on Wednesday.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nGriffin made good on his apparent threat. After telling fellow <a href=https:\/\/youtu.be\/dyOklmYmvr4>commissioners in Otero County at a special  meeting last Thursday<\/a>  that he was about to leave New Mexico for D.C.  &#8212; with   firearms in tow &#8212;  he showed up over the weekend. He was <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/indianz\/status\/1351028498928955397>arrested on  on Sunday<\/a>, on a  major  street  right next to the U.S. Capitol complex.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe defendant has repeatedly denied the legitimacy of the 2020 Presidential Election, has stated that Biden will never be president, and foresees &#8216;blood running out of the; U.S. Capitol in connection with efforts to prevent a Biden presidency, and has stated that &#8216;nothing is off the table&#8217; in preventing a Biden presidency,\u201d prosecutors wrote on Tuesday.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20\/04518274377.pdf>government&#8217;s memorandum<\/a> seeks an order requiring Griffin&#8217;s continued detention in the nation&#8217;s capital. It cites his \u201cracist invective\u201d as among the reasons he should be kept locked up pending trial.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n \u201cThe defendant\u2019s inflammatory conduct, repeated threats, delusional worldview, and access to firearms makes him a danger to the community,\u201d the filing states.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nGriffin has been charged with violating federal law at <a href=https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/18\/1752>18 U.S. Code 1752 (a)(1)<\/a>. Despite his recent arrival to politics, he quickly became a star among Republicans for his stalwart support for Donald Trump.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nIn February 2019, Griffin participated in a horseback ride from Maryland to the White House. Trump was so flattered that he called the county official up on the phone to thank him for the support.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLater that year, Griffin was back at the White House. Only this time, he got to go inside, where he met with Trump in the Oval Office. Couy Griffin, who heads up a group ca&#8230;<\/p>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/s\/desktop\/43517217\/img\/favicon.ico\" alt=\"YouTube\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tYouTube\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Inside Edition: <a href=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MJYlLa8NRqM>Protester Couy Griffin Says He\u2019s Not Sorry for Assault on Capitol<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nBut after Republicans learned of Griffin&#8217;s presence at the January 6 attack and of his threats of further violence in D.C., they began to distance themselves.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cMr. Griffin does not represent The Republican Party of New Mexico nor does he speak for the party,&#8221;\r\nsaid <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Pearce_(politician)\">Steve Pearce<\/a>, a former member of U.S. Congress whose represented a district that includes Otero County. \r\n<P><\/p>\r\n&#8220;RPNM does not endorse or condone the statements made by Cowboys for Trump Founder Couy Griffin,\r\nsaid Pearce, who chairs the state GOP, said <a href=https:\/\/newmexico.gop\/rpnm-statement-on-comments-made-by-couy-griffin\/>two days after the attack<\/a>.  \u201cRPNM condemns violence and any threats of violence against any person or group. What happened in Washington was wrong and was a stain on our great democracy.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to federal prosecutors, Griffin&#8217;s work history includes a stint as a \u201cwestern or cowboy performer\u201d for the Walt Disney Company in Paris, France.
