Photo courtesy Oneida Indian Nation<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Oneida Nation reclaims ancestors held by museum at Harvard University<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Wednesday, December 4, 2024<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oneidaindiannation.com\/\">Oneida Indian Nation<\/a> has reclaimed the remains of seven ancestors who were being held by the <a href=\"https:\/\/peabody.harvard.edu\/\">Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology<\/a> at Harvard University.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAccording to the tribe, the ancestors were removed from their resting places in 1878. Photo courtesy Oneida Indian Nation<\/figcaption>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n A tribal delegation traveled to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard University<\/a> in Massachusetts on Tuesday to reclaim the remains and burial objects. The ancestors and items are being returned pursuant to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/nagpra\/index.htm\">Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act<\/a>, the federal law known as NAGPRA.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;Samuel W. Garman removed the human remains and associated funerary objects from Brier Hill in St. Lawrence County, NY, in May of 1878,&#8221; a <a href=https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2024\/03\/26\/2024-06271\/notice-of-inventory-completion-peabody-museum-of-archaeology-and-ethnology-harvard-university>March 26 notice<\/a> in the Federal Register reads. &#8220;Garman presented the human remains and associated funerary objects to Alexander Agassiz, who donated them to the Peabody Museum that same month.&#8221;\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe tribe&#8217;s ongoing NAGPRA efforts were <a href=https:\/\/www.oneidaindiannation.com\/abc-national-news-profiles-the-oneida-indian-nations-efforts-to-repatriate-ancestral-remains\/>profiled by ABC News<\/a> last week. The law requires museums, educational institutions and other facilities that received federal funds to repatriate ancestors and artifacts to their rightful American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian owners.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nDespite the law, compliance has been slow.  New <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2024\/02\/07\/nagpra-enforcement-enters-new-era-after-more-than-30-years\/>NAGPRA regulations finalized<\/a> by the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a> in January of this year   imposed new consultation guidelines and deadlines going forward, as well as requiring institutions to obtain free, prior and informed consent from Native peoples before displaying items belonging to their communities.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\r\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center;
