On a bigger scale, much of the American west was originally mapped and named by explorers like Lewis and Clark and John Wesley Powell in the 1800s.

It’s now up to Native American surveyors to include their unique understanding of the land going forward. Tune in to hear from Native land surveyors about their work and the need to recruit more Native people to their ranks.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2048" height="1365" data-attachment-id="58380" data-permalink="https://indianz.com/News/2024/12/02/native-america-calling-getting-the-lay-of-the-land/bridgertetonnationalforest/" data-orig-file="https://indianz.com/News/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/02/bridgertetonnationalforest.jpg" data-orig-size="2048,1365" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Bridger-Teton National Forest" data-image-description="
Bridger-Teton National Forest

" data-image-caption="
Land surveyor equipment is seen in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.
