Thom Tillis<\/a> (R-North Carolina) is blocking a <a href=https:\/\/www.rounds.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/rounds-thune-legislation-to-preserve-tribal-property-rights-at-wounded-knee-massacre-site-unanimously-passes-committee>bill that would protect the Wounded Knee massacre site<\/a> in South Dakota.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nDuring debate on the floor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/\">U.S. Senate<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/kaSr5xFcO_I\">November 21, 2024<\/a>, Tillis objected to consideration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/2088\">S.2088<\/a>, the Wounded Knee Massacre Memorial and Sacred Site Act. He objected because he hasn\u2019t been able to secure federal recognition for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumbeetribe.com\/\">Lumbee Tribe<\/a>, a state-recognized group in his home state of North Carolina.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nA fellow Republican &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rounds.senate.gov\">Sen. Mike Rounds<\/a> (R-South Dakota) &#8212; is the sponsor of S.2088. The bill would protect 40 acres at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wounded_Knee_Massacre\">Wounded Knee massacre site<\/a> on behalf of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oglala.gov\">Oglala Sioux Tribe<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheyenneriversioux.com\">Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nDue to Tillis\u2019s objection, the Senate was not able to pass the bill, which comes 134 years after <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2024\/11\/18\/ryman-lebeau-rescind-the-wounded-knee-massacre-medals\/\">U.S. Army soldiers massacred more than 300 Lakota women, children, elders and men at Wounded Knee<\/a> on December 29, 1890.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAnd despite his objection, the Senate was able to pass three Indian bills that were brought to the floor by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schatz.senate.gov\">Sen. Brian Schatz<\/a> (D-Hawaii), the chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\">Senate Committee on Indian Affairs<\/a>. They follow:\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/385\">S.385<\/a>, a bill to update the Native American Tourism and Improving Visitor Experience Act, also known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2016\/09\/26\/president-barack-obama-signs-bill-to-pro.asp\">NATIVE Act<\/a>, by promoting <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2024\/08\/28\/bureau-of-indian-affairs-solicits-proposals-for-tourism-grants\/\">tourism in American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/1322\">S.1322<\/a>, the Unlocking Native Lands and Opportunities for Commerce and Key Economic Developments Act, a bill to ensure <a href=https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-release\/democratic\/schatz-murkowski-introduce-bill-expand-tribal-lease-authority-support\/>tribes can lease their lands for economic development and other purposes<\/a> without seeking federal approval for every action.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/senate-bill\/2868\">S.2868<\/a>, a bill to ensure the <a href=\"https:\/\/lowersioux.com\/\">Lower Sioux Indian Community<\/a> in Minnesota can pursue economic development opportunities without seeking federal approval for every action.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nVideo Source: U.S. Senate\r\n<p><\/P>\r\n<strong>Thumbnail photo of <a href=https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jmm7\/21294256474\/>Wounded Knee cemetery on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota by Jeremiah M.
