The birds themselves are prominent in cultural stories, but of the more than 50 original species of honeycreepers, only 17 survive &#8212; and those are threatened with extinction. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSeveral factors contribute to the population decline, but <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nature.org\/2024\/05\/12\/how-can-you-stop-a-disease-carrying-mosquito\/\">a pressing concern<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2026\/02\/260211073016.htm\">mosquito-borne avian malaria<\/a>.
