Photo: <a href=https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/cbpphotos\/54075202367\/>Jaime Rodriquez \/ U.S. Customs and Border Protection<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Donald Trump has promised mass deportations, but public support is mixed<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, November 11, 2024<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By Mia Osmonbekov and Kelechukwu Iruoma<\/div>\r\n<DIV class=source>Cronkite News<\/DIV>\r\n<DIV class=source-website><A \r\nhref=\"https:\/\/cronkitenews.azpbs.org\/\">cronkitenews.azpbs.org<\/A><\/DIV>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. &#8212; President-elect Donald Trump made mass deportations his signature campaign promise, and in his <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/NativeVote\/2024\/11\/06\/donald-trump-claims-victory-in-2024-presidential-election\/>victory speech<\/a> last Wednesday, he asserted that voters gave him \u201can unprecedented and powerful mandate.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Does that mandate extend to rounding up and expelling 11 million undocumented immigrants?<\/p>\r\n<p>Polls show relatively soft support for a proposal with such widespread impact.<\/p>\r\n<p>Arizona U.S. Reps. Paul Gosar, Eli Crane and Andy Biggs were among the Republicans who have echoed Trump\u2019s call for mass deportations. But not all Republicans seeking federal office this year jumped on the bandwagon.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cWe need mass deportations and NO AMNESTY!\u201d Gosar posted on the social media platform X last year when Trump unveiled the idea of militarized mass deportations at the Conservative Political Action Conference.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We need mass deportations and NO AMNESTY.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/L6SzVLZcTx\">https:\/\/t.co\/L6SzVLZcTx<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Rep. Paul Gosar, DDS (@RepGosar) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepGosar\/status\/1633155022824304647?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 7, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<p>Biggs posted that \u201cAll illegal aliens must be deported,\u201d and in 2022, he narrated a half-hour documentary aimed at demonstrating a \u201cmigrant invasion\u201d underway at the border. Kari Lake, the GOP nominee for U.S. Senate in Arizona, called for deporting all unauthorized immigrants in February.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cIn order to save our homeland, we need to send them back to their homeland and start repatriating these people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\r\n<p>Seven-term U.S. Rep. David Schweikert, R-Fountain Hills, seeking reelection in a toss-up district that includes Paradise Valley and Scottsdale, openly distanced himself from Trump\u2019s proposal as he sought to fend off Democrat Amish Shah.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cHe thinks his district is probably a little bit more moderate than Andy Biggs\u2019 district or Eli Crane&#8217;s district,\u201d said Republican consultant Marcus Dell\u2019Artino. That, he added, \u201cprobably led to him talking about other immigration measures other than deportation.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">All illegal aliens must be deported. <br><br>Period.<\/p>&mdash; Rep Andy Biggs (@RepAndyBiggsAZ) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepAndyBiggsAZ\/status\/1615025593900204045?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 16, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<p>Other Republicans also downplayed Trump\u2019s mass deportation rhetoric even as they emphasized other proposals to beef up border security.<\/p>\r\n<p>In Texas, Sen. Ted Cruz \u2013 a top Trump ally who won a third term Tuesday \u2013 said he would prioritize removal of migrants who committed crimes over a broad roundup of millions.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cYou obviously prioritize and you start with violent criminals,\u201d Cruz told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kxan.com\/news\/texas-politics\/texas-senators-law-enforcement-downplay-trumps-promise-of-mass-deportation\/\">Austin TV station KXAN<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prri.org\/research\/challenges-to-democracy-the-2024-election-in-focus-findings-from-the-2024-american-values-survey\/\">PRRI American Values Survey<\/a> from a month ago found 47% support for mass deportations.<\/p>\r\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/ewscripps.brightspotcdn.com\/76\/25\/c50efe0b45bf80f50cbbb6ed38a7\/scripps-news-ipsos-poll.pdf\">Scripps\/Ipsos poll<\/a> conducted in mid-September put the support nationally at 54%, and at 49% in Arizona.<\/p>\r\n<p>There\u2019s a huge partisan gap.<\/p>\r\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/official-polls\/fox-news-poll-two-thirds-favor-deporting-immigrants-who-live-u-s-illegally\">Fox News poll<\/a> in October found support for mass deportations was 91% among Republicans and 42% among Democrats. The Scripps\/Ipsos poll put the gap at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scrippsnews.com\/politics\/path-to-the-white-house\/scripps-news-ipsos-poll-majority-supports-mass-deportation-of-undocumented-immigrants\">86% for Republicans<\/a>, 58% for independents and 25% for Democrats.<\/p>\r\n<p>But polls also show broad support for a path for citizenship and, especially for younger migrants, protection from deportation, reflecting the nuances in public preferences.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dataforprogress.org\/blog\/2024\/10\/25\/mass-deportation-is-actually-very-unpopular\">An October poll from Data for Progress<\/a>, a progressive think tank, found that 70% of respondents support quick removal of recent arrivals who entered the country illegally. But support plummets to about 20% for asylum-seekers and people brought to the U.S. as children, and to 24% for longtime U.S. residents.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW: Voters do not actually support mass deportation.<br><br>A majority of voters believe that many types of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, should be allowed to stay in the country.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OuLPfkbhQS\">https:\/\/t.co\/OuLPfkbhQS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aTVH8ncW3B\">pic.twitter.com\/aTVH8ncW3B<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Data for Progress (@DataProgress) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DataProgress\/status\/1849887439285858661?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<p>Mass deportations would have dramatic implications for portions of the U.S. populace. <a href=\"https:\/\/cmsny.org\/publications\/hispanic-undocumented-immigrants-millet-pavilon-101722\/\">The Center for Migration Studies estimated<\/a> two years ago that one-third of the nation\u2019s 21 million Hispanic immigrants lack documents allowing them to be in the country.<\/p>\r\n<p>According to the Department of Homeland Security, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/ohss.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-06\/2024_0418_ohss_estimates-of-the-unauthorized-immigrant-population-residing-in-the-united-states-january-2018%25E2%2580%2593january-2022.pdf\">11 million<\/a> \u201cunauthorized immigrants\u201d in the U.S. \u2013 a figure that includes people who entered the country without permission or stayed after their visa expired.<\/p>\r\n<p>Many live with relatives who are U.S. citizens \u2013 including spouses, siblings, parents and children. Trump has not signaled any leniency for parents of young American citizens.<\/p>\r\n<p>Some GOP candidates fully embraced Trump\u2019s proposal.<\/p>\r\n<p>In Ohio, Bernie Moreno, who ousted Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown on Tuesday, based his campaign on \u201ckicking out\u201d undocumented immigrants. He called for the deportation of lawful Haitian immigrants living in Springfield, Ohio \u2013 the city at the heart of Trump\u2019s false claims about Haitian immigrants eating pet cats and dogs.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">What\u2019s happening in Springfield is a Democrat created disaster led by Kamala Harris &amp; Sherrod Brown, who shielded illegals from being deported. <br><br>I\u2019ll be the Border Senator &amp; will work with Pres Trump to deport every single unvetted &amp; illegal immigrant. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FlqciV321E\">https:\/\/t.co\/FlqciV321E<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Bernie Moreno (@berniemoreno) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/berniemoreno\/status\/1834999788636635544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 14, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<p>Reyna Montoya, founder of Aliento, an Arizona-based group that advocates for immigrants with a variety of legal status, said she expects Trump to follow through with his mass deportation promise.<\/p>\r\n<p>It\u2019s not mere \u201ccampaign talk,\u201d she said \u2013 though the logistical challenges and costs would be prohibitive, a view widely shared by immigration enforcement experts.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cDo they have the capability of doing that? Probably not deporting 11 million people on the spot, but they do have the infrastructure to do a lot of harm,\u201d Montoya said. \u201cThis is where we are right now, sadly, in our nation.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Trump advisers say there\u2019s no doubt he will follow through, among them Tom Homan, who led Immigration and Customs Enforcement for 18 months during Trump\u2019s first term.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cI will run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen,\u201d Homan said at a conservative conference in Washington in July. \u201cThey ain\u2019t seen s\u2014 yet. Wait until 2025.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Although polls showed mixed support for mass deportation, concern about illegal immigration was \u201cclearly the No. 1 issue\u201d this election, according to Dell\u2019Artino.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cClearly, talking about immigration had an effect and led to Trump&#8217;s win, as well as numerous Republican wins in the U.S. Senate,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople have massively underestimated the frustration throughout this country with immigration.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>ICE veterans and other experts largely agree that it would be impossible to identify, find, process and deport 11 million people during the next four years. But with enough resources and political will, it would be possible, eventually \u2013 especially if, as supporters of the proposal expect, many leave voluntarily before getting caught.<\/p>\r\n<p>The American Immigration Council, an advocacy group, estimated that deportations on this scale would cost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/mass-deportation\">$968 billion<\/a> over the course of a decade.<\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Donald Trump says there\u2019s no \u2018price tag\u2019 on mass deportations. <br><br>He\u2019s wrong. Learn more: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GFQFE3YYkg\">https:\/\/t.co\/GFQFE3YYkg<\/a><\/p>&mdash; American Immigration Council (@immcouncil) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/immcouncil\/status\/1854936792639709339?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 8, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<p>By some estimates, removing so many people from the U.S. workforce would cut the nation\u2019s gross domestic product (GDP) by anywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org\/research\/mass-deportation\">4.2% to 6.8%<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Pablo Correa, executive director of Rural Arizona Action, a nonprofit that advocates for rural communities, said mass deportation is not viable, isn\u2019t a good solution to the immigration crisis and would harm the agricultural sector.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cHe has no mandate,\u201d Correa said. \u201cOur communities need to prepare to push back, take care of each other and to continue to advocate for immigrant communities.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cIt would destroy the rural communities and the local economies,\u201d he said. \u201cThere is nothing good that will come out of this policy.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Colleen Putzel-Kavanaugh, a policy analyst at the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute, agreed that draining the labor force needed in farming, construction and other industries could have a devastating effect on the economy.<\/p>\r\n<p>But she\u2019s not so sure Trump can\u2019t deliver on his promise \u2013 as long as Republicans control Congress and can authorize billions of dollars for the effort.<\/p>\r\n<p>The GOP has already clinched a Senate majority. Vote-counting continues in dozens of House races nationwide as the party seeks to expand its slim majority.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cIt would require increased resources to Immigration and Customs Enforcement in order to carry out such an event, which would require congressional cooperation,\u201d Putzel-Kavanaugh said. \u201cWe&#8217;ve been in a divided Congress for many years now.
