Photo by Indianz.Com <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/4.0\/\">(CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h1-responsive\">&#8216;Happy days are here again&#8217;<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"h5-responsive sub\">Indian Country celebrates election of Joe Biden as president<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, November 9, 2020<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By Acee Agoyo<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBLACK LIVES MATTER PLAZA &#8212; Just five months after <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/06\/03\/the-cops-are-moving-too-jen-deerinwater-at-dcprotests-georgefloyd\/>Donald Trump forcefully cleared peaceful protesters<\/a> from a historic church here in the nation&#8217;s capital, Americans from all walks of life  came together to celebrate the election of <a href=https:\/\/joebiden.com\/>Democrat Joe Biden<\/a> as president.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe scene at the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._John%27s_Episcopal_Church,_Lafayette_Square>St. John&#8217;s Church<\/a>   was the complete opposite of the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump_photo_op_at_St._John%27s_Church>terror that had been inflicted<\/a> by the outgoing occupant of the White House.\r\nTear gas, rubber bullets and police in riot gear were replaced by relief and joy as  thousands of people descended on the streets  of Washington, D.C., after the <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/07\/the-race-has-been-called-for-democrat-joe-biden\/>2020 presidential race was called<\/a> on Saturday morning.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cHappy days are here again,\u201d   <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/07\/tlingit-voter-frances-kraus-88-celebrates-in-nations-capital\/>Frances Kraus<\/a>, an 88-year-old Tlingit elder, told Indianz.Com amid the celebration.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The heart of the celebration in the nation\u2019s capital is Black Lives Matter Plaza. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SomethingElse?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SomethingElse<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SomethingElseHeritageMonth?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SomethingElseHeritageMonth<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hsDc64agVy\">pic.twitter.com\/hsDc64agVy<\/a><\/p>&mdash; indianz.com (@indianz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/indianz\/status\/1325135165463683072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 7, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThough Kraus is originally from <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kake,_Alaska>Kake<\/a>, a predominantly Native community in Alaska,  she cast her vote for  for Biden and his running mate Kamala  Harris in D.C., where she currently resides. But before she joined thousands of others in the streets, she   eagerly informed her people back home about the outcome of the closely-watched race.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cI called people in Alaska to let them know,\u201d Kraus said. Accounting for the time difference of four hours, it was  still early morning in Kake  when the crowds began to gather  in Washington.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nProudly sporting an \u201cAlaska&#8221; cap, Kraus was confident that her fellow Tlingit voters, many of whom are served by the <a href=http:\/\/www.kake-nsn.gov\/>Organized Village of Kake<\/a>, were   happy about the results too. And she was right: 57.2 percent of voters in her community supported Biden and Harris, according to <a href=https:\/\/www.elections.alaska.gov\/results\/20GENR\/Map\/>unofficial results from the state division of elections<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cI&#8217;m smiling under this,\u201d Kraus said   from beneath her <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19<\/a> face  covering.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div style=\"width: 1280px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-4315-1\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" poster=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/nomoretrump-scaled.jpg\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/nomoretrump.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/nomoretrump.mp4\">https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/nomoretrump.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">&#8216;No More Trump&#8217;: Crowd cheers at Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington, D.C., on November 7, 2020. Voters  across Indian Country registered overwhelmingly strong support for the   Democratic ticket, helping Biden and Harris achieve victory  in key states like Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cThe First Americans of this country, including a large majority of Navajo voters, had a major impact in the outcome of the presidential election in several swing states \u2013- that needs to be recognized and acknowledged by all,\u201d said <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/NNPrezNez>President Jonathan Nez<\/a> of the <a href=https:\/\/www.navajo-nsn.gov\/>Navajo Nation<\/a>, who was   among the <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/10\/15\/hundreds-of-tribal-and-indian-country-leaders-endorse-joe-biden-for-president\/>hundreds of tribal and Indian leaders who endorsed<\/a> the Biden-Harris ticket. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn Apache County in Arizona, for example, 66 percent of the vote went for Biden, <a href=https:\/\/results.arizona.vote\/#\/featured\/18\/0>according to unofficial results from the Secretary of State<\/a> The population there is 75 percent American Indian and Alaska Native.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSimilar results   in other battleground states also showed the power of the Native vote. In Menominee County in Wisconsin, home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menominee-nsn.gov\/\">Menominee Nation<\/a>, Biden won a whopping 82 percent of the ballots,  <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/08\/midwest-alliance-of-sovereign-tribes-congratulates-democrats-joe-biden-and-kamala-harris\/>according to the the Midwest Alliance of Sovereign Tribes<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe worked hard to facilitate the Native vote in the Midwest understanding what was at stake and really turned out the vote,\u201d said President  Shannon Holsey   of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mohican.com\/\">Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians<\/a>, another Biden supporter.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cEspecially at a time of epic challenges,\u201d Holsey  said in reference to the pandemic, which continues to affect Native people at disproportionate rates.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/P>\r\nThe clear choices seen in Indian Country, however, have yet to register in other parts of the nation.   <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/07\/donald-trump-announces-big-press-conference-in-pennsylvania\/>Donald Trump has so far refused to accept<\/a> the outcome of the election, with his <a href=<a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/07\/donald-trump-supporters-claim-stolen-election-at-u-s-supreme-court\/>backers crying fraud<\/a> despite lacking solid evidence of wrongdoing at the polls.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe Republican Party at large is also  refusing to budge.  That includes  <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/08\/native-republicans-silent-on-joe-biden-and-kamala-harris-victory\/>three Native Republicans who have gone silent about the presidential race<\/a> even as they <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/03\/tom-cole-chickasaw-wins-in-oklahoma\/>achieved victory<\/a> in their <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/03\/markwayne-mullin-cherokee-wins-in-oklahoma\/>respective Congressional<\/a> districts.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cPresident Trump or any individual of any political party has every right to exhaust every option to ensure an accurate outcome for the American people,\u201d asserted <a href=https:\/\/cole.house.gov\/>Rep. Tom Cole<\/a> (R-Oklahoma), a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.chickasaw.net\/>Chickasaw Nation<\/a> who otherwise has worked across party lines to advance tribal interests on Capitol Hill.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n<a href=https:\/\/mullin.house.gov\/>Rep. Markwayne Mullin<\/a> (R-Oklahoma),  a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.cherokee.org\/>Cherokee Nation<\/a>, offered a far more defiant reaction. Photo by Indianz.Com <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/4.0\/\">(CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)<\/a> \r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAnd while <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/04\/yvette-herrell-cherokee-wins-in-new-mexico\/>newcomer Yvette Herrell<\/a>, also Cherokee, made history by becoming the <a hrehttps:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/04\/yvette-herrell-cherokee-wins-in-new-mexico\/>first Native woman to win Congressional office<\/a> as a Republican, she too is spreading Trump&#8217;s misleading messages  about the election. She hasn&#8217;t bothered to  update her social media accounts since securing victory in New Mexico&#8217;s 2nd District, except for a  <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HerrellForCongress\/posts\/2569300623368171>post on Monday showcasing her pro-life bona fides<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBut if Americans are looking to Biden and Harris to start settling scores after the heated race, they aren&#8217;t finding it in the president-elect  and the vice president-elect. In an <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/nativevote\/2020\/11\/07\/joe-biden-and-kamala-harris-address-the-nation\/>address to the nation<\/a> on Saturday evening, both mentioned Native people as they emphasized  unity   and positivity.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cTo all those who supported us: I am proud of the campaign we built and ran,\r\nBiden said from Wilmington, Delaware. \u201cI am proud of the coalition we put together, the broadest and most diverse in history.\u201d \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWhite. Latino. Asian. She said women like <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shyamala_Gopalan>Shyamala Gopalan<\/a> helped pave the way for her election as the first woman vice president of the United States.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cShe believed so deeply in an America where a moment like this is possible,\u201d said Harris, the U.S. Senator from California. \u201cAnd so I am thinking about her and about the generations of women &#8212;  Black women, Asian, White, Latina, Native American women  &#8212; who throughout our nation\u2019s history have paved the way for this moment tonight,  women who fought and sacrificed so much for equality and liberty and justice for all.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nTribal leaders also made node of Harris&#8217;s groundbreaking achievement. The number needed to win the presidency is 270.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nBallots are still being counted in a handful of states.
