He was 107.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nKinsel, who was from the Arizona portion of the <a href=https:\/\/www.navajo-nsn.gov\/>Navajo Nation<\/a>,  enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1942. He was among the hundreds of Navajo citizens who used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intelligence.gov\/people\/barrier-breakers-in-history\/453-navajo-code-talkers\">Navajo language to transmit messages in an unbreakable code<\/a> during World War II.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cOn behalf of the 25th Navajo Nation Council, we are deeply saddened to learn of the passing\r\nof John Kinsel Sr., one of the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers,\u201d Crystalyne Curley, Speaker of the <a href=https:\/\/www.navajonationcouncil.org\/>Navajo Nation Council<\/a>, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/21\/nnc101924.pdf\">news release<\/a> on Saturday.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOn behalf of the 25th Navajo Nation Council, we are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Kinsel Sr., one of the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers\u201d: The Navajo Nation Council is mourning the loss of John Kinsel Sr., who died on October 19, 2024, at the age of 107. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HH8i5Vs38s\">pic.twitter.com\/HH8i5Vs38s<\/a><\/p>&mdash; indianz.com (@indianz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/indianz\/status\/1848088068982538505?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 20, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nKinsel served in the Pacific theater during World War II, fighting in the  Battle of Bougainville , the Battle of Guam and the Battle of Iwo Jima. After returning to the United States following the end of the global conflict, he was discharged in 1946.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cBeyond his legacy of a warrior, he was also a proud Navajo man who upheld the values of his heritage while serving his country with distinction. As we honor his life, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, loved ones, and the entire Navajo Nation,\u201d said Curley, the leader of the tribe&#8217;s legislative branch.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresidentNygren\/\">President Buu Nygren<\/a>  said he learned about Kinsel&#8217;s passing from the late veteran&#8217;s family. He  ordered ordered all flags on the Navajo Nation to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise  on Sunday, October 20, until sunset on Sunday, October 27. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Mr. Kinsel was a Marine who bravely and selflessly fought for all of us in the most terrifying circumstances with the greatest responsibility as a Navajo Code Talker,&#8221;  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresidentNygren\/posts\/pfbid0rS6vV4wBwCjpKPvkUuM7Hz5F9jT3e3ThYGYgBkH3xZ1y5YGc8QACrNn4AkXpX3ghl\">Nygren said in a news release<\/a> from the tribe&#8217;s executive branch. &#8220;He fought alongside his brothers in arms, for the U.S. Marine Corps, for the United States and to protect the Navajo Nation in a time of war.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cIt is appropriate for us to acknowledge, recognize and honor this distinguished man\u2019s life, bravery and steadfast dedication to his family, community of Lukachukai and to the entire Navajo Nation as a model Navajo citizen and warrior,\u201d  Nygren said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresidentNygren\/posts\/pfbid0rS6vV4wBwCjpKPvkUuM7Hz5F9jT3e3ThYGYgBkH3xZ1y5YGc8QACrNn4AkXpX3ghl\" data-width=\"750\" data-show-text=\"true\"><blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresidentNygren\/posts\/1097522409041376\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\"><p>President Buu Nygren expresses sincerest condolences to family of the late Navajo Code Talker John Kinsel, Sr.,&#8230;<\/p>Posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresidentNygren\">Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PresidentNygren\/posts\/1097522409041376\">Saturday, October 19, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nOver the weekend, tributes to Kinsel poured in from a number of government officials and politicians.
