Photo: <a href=https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/olivier_c11\/53916114145\/>Olivier<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\"> When a Narragansett runner made it to the Olympics<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Thursday, August 15, 2024<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By John Christian Hopkins<\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe Paris 2024 Olympics has come to an end, leaving in its wake the glory of competition, the pride of champions and the sting of defeat.<P><\/P>\r\nBut what does it mean to be an Olympian?<P><\/P>\r\nFor those vying for gold, it must feel akin to walking among the gods of Mount Olympus. To hold your head high and know that you are among the best in the world at what you do.<P><\/P>\r\nIn the end it isn\u2019t about gold or silver, it\u2019s about the challenge of pitting your power, your skill and your heart against other champions with the same dream.<P><\/P>\r\nThree Rhode Islanders competed in the Paris Olympics this year; sailor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.com\/profiles\/stuart-mcnay-843362\">Stu McNay<\/a>, rower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.com\/profiles\/emily-kallfelz\">Emily Kallfelz<\/a> and marathoner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.com\/profiles\/emily-sisson-907607\">Emily Sisson<\/a>. But Sisson won\u2019t be the first Ocean Stater to run in the Olympic marathon.<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\r\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/km2vVrcu978?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Roger Williams on YouTube: <A \r\nhref=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/km2vVrcu978\">Ellison &#8220;Tarzan&#8221; Brown &#8211; Boston \r\nMarathon winner<\/A><\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ellison_Brown\">Ellison \u201cTarzan\u201d Brown<\/a>, a member of the Narragansett Tribe, competed in the marathon during the 1936 Berlin Olympics.<P><\/P>\r\nIn 1936 Brown became the youngest winner of the Boston Marathon, which secured him a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. He was 22.<P><\/P>\r\nHe\u2019d reclaim the wreath from Boston in 1939 \u2013 this time breaking the course record and becoming the first ever to finish the race in under two-and-a-half hours \u2013 he ran it in 2 hours and 28 minutes. This win also earned Brown a spot on the 1940 U.S. Olympic team. But the games were cancelled due to World War II.<P><\/P>\r\nAnna Brown Jackson, Tarzan\u2019s granddaughter, recalls the first time she saw Tarzan honored, \u201cThe first monument in the park in the 1980s \u2026 a tree was planted in his memory.\u201d<P><\/P>\r\nTarzan\u2019s grand-nephew, Brian Lightfoot Brown was proud to advocate for his relative\u2019s inclusion in the <a href=https:\/\/www.naiahf.org\/>North American Indigenous Athletic Hall of Fame<\/a>.<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cI wanted to see if my Uncle Tarzan was in here, of course he wasn\u2019t, so I thought \u2018Well, here\u2019s an opportunity to educate someone about him\u2019,\u201d Brian Brown said. <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/tag\/brian-lightfoot-brown\/>Brown has also written several articles on Indianz.Com<\/a> about the Narragansetts and his grand-uncle Tarzan.<P><\/P>\r\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/boston_public_library\/8640359113\/\" title=\"Tarzan Brown winning the 1939 Marathon\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/8262\/8640359113_6b2f47076d_b.jpg\" class=\"img-fluid wow fadeIn\"  alt=\"Tarzan Brown winning the 1939 Marathon\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">A photo \r\nfrom the <A href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/boston_public_library\/8640359113\/\">collection of the Boston Public Library<\/A> shows Narragansett citizen Ellison \u201cTarzan\u201d \r\nBrown winning the Boston Marathon in 1939.<\/figcaption>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nTed Brown said he\u2019s always meeting people who remember his grandfather \u2013 and usually they have a Tarzan memory to share.<P><\/P>\r\nThe latest tribute to Tarzan Brown was recently when The four-mile-long <a href=https:\/\/charlestowncitizens.org\/2023\/05\/11\/ellison-tarzan-brown-trail\/>Tarzan Brown Trail opened in the Carter Preserve<\/a>, off of King\u2019s Factory Road.<P><\/P>\r\nTarzan\u2019s grandson, Ted, helped place the plaque inside a bigger boulder.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<HR><EM><a href=https:\/\/authorjohnchopkins.blogspot.com\/>John Christian Hopkins<\/a> is an award-winning Narraganset journalist, author, poet and public speaker who resides in Tuba City, Arizona.
