Titled “Secretary Haaland Message to Indigenous Boarding School Survivors,” the video was posted online by the Department of the Interior<\/a> on July 30, 2024.<\/em>\r\n

<\/P>\r\n[Greeting in the Keres language]\r\n

<\/p>\r\nTo my relatives and friends, today we\r\n\r\nhad a big day. The Department of the Interior<\/a> — the very cabinet agency created\r\n\r\nto assimilate indigenous peoples —\r\n\r\nreleased a historic investigative report detailing the impact, trauma and damage caused by federal Indian boarding schools<\/a> from 1819 through the 1970s.\r\n

<\/p>\r\nThis trauma is not new to Indigenous\r\n\r\npeople. One of the reasons I launched the\r\n\r\nFederal Indian Boarding School Initiative<\/a> was to ensure that this\r\n\r\nimportant story was told — that all of\r\n\r\nAmerica knows of the intergenerational\r\n\r\nimpacts of these policies and that we as\r\n\r\na nation take steps to heal from them.\r\n

<\/p>\r\n\r\nToday’s announcement reflects much of\r\n\r\nwhat we heard from Indigenous survivors\r\n\r\nas we traveled on the Road to Healing\r\n\r\nlast year. To those of you who shared your stories,\r\n\r\nI thank you from the bottom of my heart.\r\n

<\/P>\r\nYour experiences and those of your loved\r\n\r\nones were not shared in vain. They are\r\n\r\nthe foundation of our work.\r\n \r\nWe think of\r\n\r\nyou in everything that we do and we\r\n\r\nunderstand and appreciate your strength\r\n\r\nand courage.\r\n

<\/P>\r\nAs we continue to build out\r\n\r\na permanent oral history collection<\/a>,\r\n\r\nplease know that we will care for these\r\n\r\nstories as if they were our own.\r\n

<\/P>\r\n\r\nThe Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative<\/a> has been one of the most\r\n\r\nimportant and meaningful things I have\r\n\r\ndone as Secretary. It shows us that\r\n\r\nrepresentation truly matters.\r\n

<\/P> Using my\r\n\r\nplatform to give voice to our people our\r\n\r\nstruggles and our contributions to this\r\n\r\nnation as its original stewards has been\r\n\r\nthe honor of my lifetime. Thank you for\r\n\r\nentrusting us to help tell our story\r\n\r\nbecause Native American history is\r\n\r\nAmerican history.\r\n
