Susan Collins was the only Republican to vote no on the nomination.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nArizona&#8217;s senators also split on party lines, with Republican Sen. Martha McSally saying before the vote that she was eager to vote for &#8220;this highly qualified pioneering woman.&#8221; But Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who voted no, expressed concerns over the weekend over what she called Barrett&#8217;s &#8220;inconsistent views on legal precedent.&#8221;<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\"><iframe   src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dKppODKE-LU\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">The White House: <a href=https:\/\/youtu.be\/dKppODKE-LU>President Trump Participates in the Swearing-In Ceremony of the Honorable Amy Coney Barrett &#8211; October 26, 2020<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nOne of the precedents progressives are more concerned about is <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, the 1973 decision that recognized a woman&#8217;s right to an abortion. Democrats complained that Barrett dodged questions during her confirmation on a range of issues, including abortion rights, gun control, health care and climate change.<P><\/P>\r\nBut conservatives in Arizona defended Barrett&#8217;s performance at the hearings, and said it indicates the type of justice she will be &#8211; one who will interpret the law and apply constitutional principles, not personal beliefs.<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;You know, it&#8217;s her job to either rule on the law or say, &#8216;My views get in the way and I&#8217;m going to recuse myself.\u2019 And she said that openly in her confirmation hearings,&#8221; said Charles Heller, host of Liberty Watch Radio in Tucson.<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;I think she made that clear in her confirmation hearings,&#8221; said Heller, adding that is &#8220;the way it was meant to be.&#8221;<P><\/P>\r\nCathi Herrod, president of the Center for Arizona Policy, said Barrett&#8217;s performance during four days of hearings last week showed she is &#8220;one of the most capable, brilliant individuals ever to be nominated to the United States Supreme Court.&#8221;<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;She would not answer policy questions,&#8221; Herrod said. &#8220;This is about how a judge will interpret the law, how the judge will apply constitutional principles. It&#8217;s not a policymaking role. And I think those that oppose Judge Barrett had to look for other reasons.&#8221;<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_twitter-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorSinema\/status\/1320411882440806400\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/28\/image-58.png\" alt=\"Post Not Found - X | 404 Error\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorSinema\/status\/1320411882440806400\">\n\t\t\tPost Not Found &#8211; X | 404 Error\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorSinema\/status\/1320411882440806400\">\n\t\t\t<p>The post you&#8217;re looking for could not be found or may have been deleted.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/favicon.ico\" alt=\"X (formerly Twitter)\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tX (formerly Twitter)\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBut critics say the reason Barrett refused to be pinned down in \r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/nominations\/judicial\/?keyword=barrett\">the hearings<\/a>\r\nis because she is an &#8220;extremist.&#8221; John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety, worries that Barrett&#8217;s Barrett\u2019s views on the Second Amendment will reverse years of gun-safety gains, and that Barrett &#8220;has no place on the Supreme Court.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;Senate Republicans&#8217; hypocritical attempt to jam her through has everything to do with appeasing special interests like the gun lobby,and Everytown will work like never before to vote them out this November,&#8221; Feinblatt said.<P><\/P>\r\n\r\nBarrett is President Donald Trump&#8217;s third Supreme Court appointment, following Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. She is scheduled to be formally \r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/publicinfo\/press\/pressreleases\/pr_10-26-20\">sworn in<\/a>\r\nat the court Tuesday by Chief Justice John Roberts.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nDemocrats were also angry that the confirmation was rushed through by the Republican majority in a little over a month and that the vote came just eight days before Election Day.<P><\/P>\r\nSchumer chided the &#8220;glaring hypocrisy&#8221; of pushing Barrett through this close to an election, when the GOP refused to even grant a hearing in 2016 to then-President Barack Obama&#8217;s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, who was nominated eight months before the election.<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;Nearly every Republican in this chamber, led by the majority leader, four years ago refused to even consider the Supreme Court nomination of a Democratic president,&#8221; Schumer said.<P><\/P>\r\nSchumer said the only difference between Garland and Barrett is her views on legal issues.<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;The American people will suffer the consequences of Judge Barrett&#8217;s far-right, out of the mainstream views for generations,&#8221; Schumer said.<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nMcSally joined other Republicans who brushed aside what they called Democratic attempts to discredit Barrett&#8217;s credentials.<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;Over the last week or so there&#8217;s been a lot of distracting delay tactics by the other side of the aisle trying to derail this highly qualified woman from being on the Supreme Court,&#8221; McSally said.<P><\/P>\r\nBut Sinema said it was Barrett&#8217;s &#8220;inconsistent views&#8221; that soured her on nomination.<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;After watching the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings, reading Judge Barrett&#8217;s legal opinions and scholarly writings, and speaking with her directly, I am concerned about Judge Barrett&#8217;s inconsistent views on legal precedent, and how those inconsistencies impact her obligation to interpret and uphold the rule of law,&#8221; Sinema said in a statement.<P><\/P>\r\nHerrod questioned Sinema&#8217;s rationalization, saying she was &#8220;dancing around the issue, clearly trying to find grounds for her to vote no.&#8221;<P><\/P>\r\n\r\nMcSally, who was at the White House with other Republicans for \r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?477418-1\/justice-amy-coney-barrett-sworn-justice-clarence-thomas\">Barrett&#8217;s swearing-in,<\/a>\r\nsaid she has no doubts Barrett is right for the job.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;We&#8217;ve had hearings where she showed how incredibly capable she is with no notes in front of her,&#8221; McSally said before the vote Monday. &#8220;It was really like a lesson for every American to tune into her understanding of the Constitution and the role of a judge.&#8221;<P><\/P>\r\n<STRONG>For more stories from Cronkite News, visit <A href=\"https:\/\/cronkitenews.azpbs.org\/?utm_source=referral&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=client\">cronkitenews.azpbs.org<\/A>.<\/STRONG>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<HR><EM>Note: This story originally <a href=\"https:\/\/cronkitenews.azpbs.org\/2020\/10\/26\/arizona-senators-split-as-divided-senate-puts-barrett-on-supreme-court\/\">appeared on Cronkite News<\/a>.
