So juvenile glass eels, known as elvers, are a valuable commodity for Japanese aquaculture. They supply demand for a popular traditional dish in Japan.

That demand is so high, it is threatening eel fisheries to the point that Canada is shutting down commercial seasons. Tribes maintain their treaty right to fish despite the government’s mandate.

The dispute is causing rifts with non-Indigenous fishers and government officials.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1705" data-attachment-id="36030" data-permalink="https://indianz.com/News/2024/03/04/native-america-calling-demand-for-a-japanese-staple-sparks-treaty-fishing-disputes-in-the-west/img_1640/" data-orig-file="https://indianz.com/News/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/04/ElverFishing-scaled.jpg" data-orig-size="2560,1705" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"9","credit":"","camera":"Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XSi","caption":"","created_timestamp":"1368196020","copyright":"","focal_length":"50","iso":"100","shutter_speed":"0.004","title":"IMG_1640","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Elver Fishing" data-image-description="
Elver Fishing

" data-image-caption="
Elver fishing nets are seen in Maine.
