Photo by Hannah Rygaard \/ Isanti Community Schools<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h2-responsive\">&#8216;Indian Country really got behind our team&#8217;<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"h5-responsive sub\">Santee Warriors make it to state championships<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, March 13, 2023<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By <A href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kevin_Abourezk\">Kevin Abourezk<\/A> <A href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kevin_Abourezk\"><I aria-hidden=true class=\"fab fa-twitter\"><\/I><\/A><\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nA high school basketball team from a small reservation community in Northeast Nebraska made it to the <a href=https:\/\/www.maxpreps.com\/tournament\/G2ddCKMXEe2A0wqb9tl3hA\/IWRWS6MXEe2A0wqb9tl3hA\/basketball-22-23\/2023-nsaa-state-boys-basketball-championships-(nebraska)-class-d2.htm>Class D-2 state championships<\/a> last week for just the second time in its school\u2019s history, only to get knocked out of the tournament by their first opponent.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SanteeWarriorsBasketball\/>Santee Warriors<\/a> entered the state championships as the No. 7 seed. For the first round, the team was pitted against No. 2 Shelton. A controversial referee call with 7 seconds left in the game ended Santee\u2019s Cinderella run, and <a href=https:\/\/www.maxpreps.com\/games\/3-9-2023\/basketball-22-23\/santee-vs-shelton.htm?c=vEnOh4Gyb0SIwcaLxzfWFA#tab=matchup&#038;schoolid=>Shelton defeated them 72-68<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSantee Head Coach Waylon LaPlante criticized the referee\u2019s decision to call a technical foul against Santee senior and his team\u2019s lead scorer Austyn Saul. With his team leading 68-67 and inbounding, Saul turned to look behind him and brushed up against a Shelton player, who appeared to throw himself to the ground with much greater force than Saul\u2019s movement seemed to warrant.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIf you\u2019re unsure of yourself, don\u2019t blow that whistle,\u201d said LaPlante. \u201cShelton stole one from us.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=row>\r\n<div class=col-8>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/news\/2023\/03\/13\/indian-country-really-got-behind-our-team-santee-warriors-make-it-to-state-championships\/dsc_0155\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31104\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"31104\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/apromisekept\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/31\/APromiseKept.png\" data-orig-size=\"970,600\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"A Promise Kept\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;A Promise Kept&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href=https:\/\/amzn.to\/43q689K&gt;A Promise Kept: The Muscogee (Creek) Nation and McGirt v. Photo by Hannah Rygaard \/ Isanti Community Schools<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nShelton\u2019s Ashton Simmons made both of his free throws from the technical, and Santee failed to score again.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBut LaPlante didn\u2019t lay all the blame on the referee. The big lights and big crowds of the Devaney Sports Center threw the young players off their game, he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe jitters were getting them,\u201d he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe Warriors started off slow, earning less than 10 points in the first quarter and ended the first half down 13 points.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBut the team went to work quickly in the second half, and outscored the Bulldogs 22 to 5 in the third quarter, gaining a four-point lead heading into the fourth.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe fourth quarter saw the teams trading three-point shots before Shelton finally ended Santee\u2019s first state tournament run since 1936.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThey left everything on the court. They made it in no small part by having the state\u2019s leading scorer, Saul.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd they got to Lincoln with the support of their entire community, as well as the support of other reservation communities in Nebraska, LaPlante said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe definitely appreciate the support that we get,\u201d he said.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nMuch of the village of less than 400 people gathered to see the boys off the morning the team drove to Lincoln. And they stopped in Winnebago for a pep rally and lunch, followed by a stop in Walthill, where Omaha Nation students and fans hosted the team.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn Winnebago, they fed the boys Indian dogs and Indian burgers and prayed with the boys.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=https:\/\/santeesiouxnation.net\/>Santee Sioux Tribe<\/a> Chairman Alonzo Denney said the team has lifted up its entire community.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThey put Santee on the map for us,\u201d he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd he thanked the other Native communities that supported the team.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIndian Country really got behind our team here,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s honorable. Even back then, it was clear the team had talent, he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe were good back then, really good,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what brought us here.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSophomore guard Tasunka Starling, 15, said chemistry, hard work and an aggressive defense also were important factors to the team\u2019s success.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cOffense wins games.
