With taxes and fees, the cost for one night exceeds $2,000 at each hotel. <\/figcaption>\r\n<HR>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAn organizer for the <a href=https:\/\/www.lakotanationinvitational.com\/>Lakota Nation Invitational<\/a>, which began Tuesday and continues through Saturday, said he was surprised to learn that the two hotels were charging more than $2,000 a night during the event, which takes place December 13-17 at the local convention center.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cNo one can afford that,\u201d said Bryan Brewer, executive director for the LNI tournament. \u201cI don\u2019t know why they would even do that. Maybe they don\u2019t want our business.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nHe said he planned to contact local tourism officials to see if they could help to get the two hotels to adjust their rates.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LakotaNationTournament\/posts\/pfbid0uiWdFbAQRGYWTorMS6L6qmUMgS8xWNivKBMcQsNt9HVtS8fNMLDxArUPKYBYMK7pl\" data-width=\"552\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block;\"><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBrewer said hotels in Rapid City and in nearby towns typically raise their rates during the tournament, which provides a significant economic boost each year to the Rapid City hotel and food industry. But usually they don\u2019t raise their rates much more than $250 a night.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nHe said he has brought up the issue of hotels raising their rates during the tournament with city and local tourism officials in the past and has been told that often the corporate offices for those hotels are the entities that decide to raise rates during the tournament.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI just don\u2019t understand it at all,\u201d he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nVi Waln, a Rosebud Lakota writer who lives on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, was one of the first people Tuesday morning to alert others on social media to the extraordinarily high rates being charged by the Residence Inn.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThey love money but hate Indigenous people,\u201d Waln said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_indianz-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/10\/19\/business-sued-over-racial-discrimination-against-native-patrons\/\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/29\/indiansallowedndncollectivephotobywilliewhite-2.jpg\" alt=\"\u2018We just have to say no to them!!\u2019: Business sued over racial discrimination against Native patrons\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/10\/19\/business-sued-over-racial-discrimination-against-native-patrons\/\">\n\t\t\t\u2018We just have to say no to them!!\u2019: Business sued over racial discrimination against Native patrons\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/10\/19\/business-sued-over-racial-discrimination-against-native-patrons\/\">\n\t\t\t<p>A business in South Dakota that banned Native patrons from the premises is being sued by the United States government for racial discrimination.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/favicon.ico\" alt=\"Indianz.Com\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tIndianz.Com\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nNative people have long encountered hostile and outright discriminatory business practices  in Rapid City, the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rapid_City,_South_Dakota>second most populous metropolitan area<\/a> in South Dakota. In October, the <a href=https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/>Department of Justice<\/a> filed a lawsuit against a local hotel for denying services to the original inhabitants of the state, much of which was promised to the tribes of the Sioux Nation by treaty.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;I believe the Department of Justice actually needs to do a much wider scope of investigation into systemic racism in the Rapid City community,&#8221; Nick Tilsen, the chief executive officer of <a href=https:\/\/ndncollective.org\/>NDN Collective<\/a>, a Native-led organization, told Indianz.Com on the day the lawsuit was announced on October 19.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nNDN Collective is already suing the Grand Gateway Hotel for its racist practices, Tilsen pointed out. Representatives of the organization were repeatedly denied rooms at the facility and were escorted off the property by one of the owners, who is named as a <a href=<ar href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/10\/19\/business-sued-over-racial-discrimination-against-native-patrons\/>defendant in the federal lawsuit<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Grand Gateway, quite frankly, is a byproduct of a racist environment and a racist system,&#8221; Tilsen said in an interview. &#8220;That&#8217;s how that  behavior came &#8216;okay&#8217; for them    &#8212; because there&#8217;s a culture of racism and systemic,  white supremacy here in the community.&#8221;\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe hotel and its operators <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/13\/16513815734.pdf>responded to the federal complaint<\/a> on November 14. They admitted denying a room to at least one person  &#8212; because she was a &#8220;local&#8221; resident, meaning she resides in Rapid City. They further acknowledged that  their  &#8220;local policy&#8221; wasn&#8217;t formally written down but refused to admit  turning away &#8220;Native Americans&#8221; for business.\r\n<p><\/P>\r\nIn their response, attorneys for Grand Gateway wrote that &#8220;Defendants are without sufficient information to either admit or deny whether Sunny Red Bear or persons with her were Native American.&#8221;\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to the  federal complaint, Sunny Red Bear, who is Lakota from the <a href=https:\/\/www.cheyenneriversiouxtribe.org\/>Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe<\/a>, was denied a room at the hotel.
