MSU photo by Kelly Gorham<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Montana State part of $2.25M tribal transportation effort<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Tuesday, November 29, 2022<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">MSU News Service<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source-links\"><A \r\nhref=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/news\/\">montana.edu\/news<\/A><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBOZEMAN \u2014 As part of a consortium that was recently awarded up to $2.25 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/westerntransportationinstitute.org\/\">Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University<\/a> will provide transportation outreach and technical assistance to tribes across the Upper Great Plains and Intermountain West.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe five-year funding will support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/clas\/ttap\/\">Tribal Technical Assistance Program<\/a>, or TTAP, which is led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugpti.org\">Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute<\/a> at North Dakota State University. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/briefing-room\/fhwa-announces-178-million-tribal-technical-assistance-program-centers-help-tribes\">program will work with American Indian tribal governments<\/a> to build tribal capacity in program management, grow the tribal workforce, cultivate and coordinate partnerships, facilitate technology transfer and the implementation of innovations, and share results of similar initiatives across the country.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe work will be conducted in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The initial grant is for roughly $600,000 for two years with the potential for extensions and expansion over the next five years.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This Administration is deeply committed to honoring Tribal sovereignty, so that Native Americans have the freedom and opportunity to shape their futures for the better. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3iARHcxbke\">pic.twitter.com\/3iARHcxbke<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Secretary Pete Buttigieg (@SecretaryPete) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecretaryPete\/status\/1592957395944165376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 16, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWTI looks forward to sharing with tribes in our region, building their capacity to administer and manage their own transportation programs and systems,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.montana.edu\/news\/19980\/david-kack-named-director-of-msu-s-western-transportation-institute\">WTI Executive Director David Kack<\/a>. \u201cWTI has a long history of solving rural road challenges and collaborating with tribes, as well as partnering with the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe Northern Tribal Technical Assistance Center will serve the BIA\u2019s Rocky Mountain and Great Plains Regions, which includes 29 tribes across Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming. Eight of these tribes are located in Montana. The funds will be shared through NDSU with MSU, South Dakota State University and the University of Wyoming. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAll of the participating universities host and manage existing FHWA-funded Local Technical Assistance Programs, or LTAPs, that provide transportation outreach to local units of government. WTI houses Montana\u2019s LTAP.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nThere is also considerable expertise within the collaborating universities focused on rural roads, rural road safety, and other transportation issues faced by tribes, Kack noted.
