It&#8217;s the committee&#8217;s first gathering in the nation&#8217;s capital since a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\/hearing\/roundtable-discussion-titled-promoting-and-supporting-tribal-access-spectrum-and-related\">roundtable on September 21<\/a>, almost two months ago, and since a recess preceding last week&#8217;s election.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nFour items are on the agenda for the business meeting. Notably, three of them  address tribal water issues in Arizona, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelly.senate.gov\/\">Sen. Mark Kelly<\/a> (D-Arizona), just <a href=\"https:\/\/markkelly.com\/\">won re-election<\/a>, ensuring Democratic control of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/\">U.S. Senate<\/a> in the next legislative session.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nThe bills being considered at the business meeting follow:\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8226; <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/3168>S.3168<\/a>,  to amend the White Mountain Apache Tribe Water Rights Quantification Act of 2010. The bill ensures that the <a href=\"http:\/\/whitemountainapache.org\/\">White Mountain Apache Tribe<\/a> can utilize its already <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2008\/10\/06\/white_mountain_apache_water_bi.asp\">enacted water rights settlement<\/a> to complete a water project on the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2018\/04\/24\/cronkite-news-white-mountain-apache.asp\">Fort Apache Reservation<\/a> in the state of Arizona. The bill ensures that the <a href=\"https:\/\/crit-nsn.gov\/\">Colorado River Indian Tribes<\/a> can <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/23\/crit120221.pdf\">utilize its previously ratified water rights<\/a> from the Colorado River by <a href=https:\/\/www.kelly.senate.gov\/press-releases\/senator-kelly-introduces-bill-empowering-the-colorado-river-indian-tribes-to-lease-tribal-water-to-arizona-water-users-impacted-by-drought\/>leasing or allocating<\/a> them to other entities in Arizona. The bill ratifies a water rights settlement between the <a href=\"https:\/\/hualapai-nsn.gov\">Haulapai Tribe<\/a>, the state of Arizona and the  federal government. A <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/07\/21\/cronkite-news-hualapai-tribe-pushes-for-passage-of-water-rights-settlement\/>hearing took place<\/a> on <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/07\/20\/senate-committee-on-indian-affairs-legislative-hearing-to-receive-testimony-on-s-4104-s-4439-h-r-5221\/>July 20<\/a>.\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"20\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/1308927337&#038;color=%23ff5500&#038;inverse=false&#038;auto_play=false&#038;show_user=false\"><\/iframe> \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8226; S.____, An original bill to amend the Not Invisible Act of 2019 to extend, and provide additional support for, the activities of the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a> and the <a href=https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/>Department of Justice<\/a> in connection with the <a href=https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/service\/mmu\/key-partners-involved>Joint Commission on Reducing Violent Crime Against Indians<\/a>. The Not Invisible Act was enacted to  addresses high rates of violence against American Indians and Alaska Natives, including the crisis of the missing and murdered. The bill number is not yet available.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe business meeting will be immediately followed by the legislative hearing. Three items are on the agenda &#8212; notably, all address  tribal water issues in the West:\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n&#8226; <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/4870>S.4870<\/a>, the Tule River Tribe Reserved Water Rights Settlement Act of 2022.
