Photo: Gabe Vasquez for Congress<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Native lawmaker Yvette Herrell loses re-election bid in Congress<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Friday, November 11, 2022<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe Native contingent in the <a href=https:\/\/www.house.gov\/>U.S. House of Representatives<\/a> will be down by one come the next session of the U.S. Congress.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=https:\/\/www.yvetteherrell.com>Yvette Herrell<\/a>, a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.cherokee.org\/>Cherokee Nation<\/a>, lost her re-election bid to <a href=https:\/\/herrell.house.gov>represent New Mexico&#8217;s 2nd Congressional District<\/a>. In  a 2020 matchup, she defeated the incumbent in a district located in the southern part of New Mexico and one that has been home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/mescaleroapachetribe.com\/\">Mescalero Apache Tribe<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortsillapache-nsn.gov\/\">Fort Sill Apache Tribe<\/a>, parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navajo-nsn.gov\/\">Navajo Nation<\/a> and some Pueblo communities.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe district has since been redrawn, with the Mescalero Apache Reservation now in New Mexico&#8217;s 1st Congressional District. The other tribal nations continue to be a part of the 2nd.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nVasquez&#8217;s victory means New Mexico&#8217;s Congressional delegation is entirely Democratic for the first time since the 2018 season. <a href=\"https:\/\/stansbury.house.gov\/\">Rep. Melanie Stansbury<\/a> (D-New Mexico) won her <a href=\"https:\/\/melaniefornm.com\/\">re-election bid for the 1st District<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fernandez.house.gov\/\">Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez<\/a> (D-New Mexico) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teresaforall.com\/\">re-elected in the 3rd<\/a>. Both candidates won by comfortable margins, according to <a href=https:\/\/electionresults.sos.state.nm.us\/resultsSW.aspx?type=FED&#038;map=CTY>unofficial results<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\n Leger Fernandez has served as chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/subcommittees\/subcommittee-for-indigenous-peoples-of-the-united-states\">House Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States<\/a>, which is part of the <a href=https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/>House Committee on Natural Resources<\/a>, during the 117th Congress.
