It comes as urban Indian providers are finally seeing an increase of resources amid the ongoing <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, which has affected American Indians and Alaska Natives at disproportionate rates.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;We look forward to working with Roselyn Tso to carry out the mission of IHS in fulfilling the trust responsibility to provide health care equity for all American Indians and Alaska Natives,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/covid19\/2022\/09\/22\/national-council-of-urban-indian-health-ncuih-16\/\">NCUIH Chief Executive Officer Francys Crevier said<\/a> on Wednesday. &#8220;We continue to work with Congress and this administration to elevate this position within HHS where it belongs to lift Native voices and improve health outcomes.&#8221;\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2019\/02\/06\/ihs-leadership-crisis.asp\">IHS had gone without a permanent leader<\/a> for six of the last seven years, including for most of the Donald Trump administration. The last Senate-confirmed director was Michael Weahkee, a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.ashiwi.org\/>Pueblo of Zuni<\/a> who stepped down on January 20, 2021, at the request of President Joe Biden. He had only <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/01\/15\/director-of-indian-health-service-steps-down-at-request-of-president-elect-joe-biden\/>been on the job<\/a> for less than a year.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nElizabeth Fowler, a citizen of the <a href=\"https:\/\/comanchenation.com\/\">Comanche Nation<\/a>, then stepped in as &#8220;acting&#8221; director of the IHS. It took another two months for Biden to <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/03\/09\/a-historic-nomination-indian-health-service-finally-on-track-for-new-leadership\/>announce Tso as his nominee<\/a> to run the agency.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cWhen I travel across the region to different IHS facilities, I am reminded of the many health disparities facing American Indians and Alaskan Natives \u2014 &#8212;  health disparities that in many cases were made worse by COVID-19,\u201d Tso said at her nomination hearing in May.\r\n<p><\/P>\r\n\u201cFor example, sadly, today, too many Navajo families still do not have access to running water in their homes,\u201d said Tso, who most recently served as director of the <a href=https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/navajo\/>Navajo Area of the IHS<\/a>. \u201cAccess to clean, safe drinking water is essential to the health and well-being of our people.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nFollowing decades of underfunding, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 prompted Congress to provide historic levels of funding for the IHS. An appropriations bill that Biden signed into law in March, for example, provides  $6.6 billion to the agency for fiscal year 2022.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_www-indianz-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/covid19\/2022\/09\/22\/national-council-of-urban-indian-health-ncuih-16\/\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/09\/ncuih-2.jpg\" alt=\"National Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH)\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/covid19\/2022\/09\/22\/national-council-of-urban-indian-health-ncuih-16\/\">\n\t\t\tNational Council of Urban Indian Health (NCUIH)\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/covid19\/2022\/09\/22\/national-council-of-urban-indian-health-ncuih-16\/\">\n\t\t\t<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to have a confirmed leader for the Indian Health Service,\u201d said Francys Crevier, CEO of the National Council of Urban Indian Health.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/favicon.ico\" alt=\"COVID-19 in Indian Country\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tCOVID-19 in Indian Country\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nYet tribal leaders and advocates say the U.S. is still failing to meet Indian Country&#8217;s health needs, amid rising costs across the nation. The <a href=https:\/\/www.nihb.org\/legislative\/budget_formulation.php>IHS Tribal Budget Formulation Workgroup<\/a> has called for the agency to receive at least $12.8 billion to address long-running and chronic disparities in Native communities.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cDedicated, long-serving leadership at the Indian Health Service is vital to fulfilling its mission,\u201d said <a href=https:\/\/www.schatz.senate.gov\/>Sen. Brian Schatz<\/a> (D-Hawaii), the chair of the <a href=https:\/\/indian.senate.gov\/>Senate Committee on Indian Affairs<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m confident that Ms. Tso will lead the Service with distinction, having the qualifications, willingness to serve Indian Country, and commitment to educating other HHS agencies on the federal government\u2019s special political and trust relationship with the Native Hawaiians, who also receive healthcare services through HHS.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cMs. Tso has demonstrated that she has the background and experience needed to succeed as the Director of the Indian Health Service,&#8221; added <a href=https:\/\/www.murkowski.senate.gov\/>Sen. Lisa Murkowski<\/a> (R-Alaska), the vice chair of the legislative panel with jurisdiction over Indian issues.  &#8220;I congratulate Ms. Tso on her unanimous confirmation in the Senate. I am confident she will work to ensure IHS fulfills its mission to raise the health status of American Indians and Alaska Natives across the country by providing top notch quality health care. Native people deserve nothing less.\u201d \r\n<P><\/P>\r\nTso went before the committee for her <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/05\/25\/nomination-hearing-to-consider-roselyn-tso-to-be-director-of-the-indian-health-service-department-of-health-and-human-services\/>confirmation hearing on May 25<\/a>.
