Jackie Walorski following fatal crash<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Thursday, August 4, 2022<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By Acee Agoyo<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pokagonband-nsn.gov\/\">Pokagon Band of Potawatomi<\/a> is mourning the loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jackie_Walorski\">Rep. Jackie Walorski <\/a>(R-Indiana) and two of her staffers who were killed in a car crash in Indiana this week.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn a statement, the tribe credited Walorski with helping advance taxation and economic development issues in Indian Country. The late lawmaker, who <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepWalorski\/status\/1554927656755421184>died on Wednesday<\/a>, was a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/waysandmeans.house.gov\/\">House Committee on Ways and Means<\/a>, one of the most powerful and influential legislative panels in the U.S. Congress.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;Congresswoman Walorski was an advocate and longtime supporter of the Pokagon Band and Indian Country on several of our key priorities,&#8221; the tribe said in the statement on Thursday.  &#8220;She was instrumental in setting up the first meeting and testimony of tribal leaders in 25 years to the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means regarding Tribal Tax Issues.&#8221;\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"300\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" allow=\"autoplay\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/playlists\/1005353032&#038;color=%23ff5500&#038;auto_play=false&#038;hide_related=false&#038;show_comments=true&#038;show_user=true&#038;show_reposts=false&#038;show_teaser=true&#038;visual=true\"><\/iframe> \r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Indianz.Com Audio: <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/indianz\/sets\/examining-the-impact-of-the-tax-code-on-native-american-tribes\" title=\"Examining the Impact of the Tax Code on Native American Tribes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Examining the Impact of the Tax Code on Native American Tribes<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe hearing, which <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/03\/02\/house-committee-on-ways-and-means-schedu.asp>took place in March 2020<\/a>, was hailed by <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/03\/04\/tribes-head-to-capitol-hill-for-historic.asp>lawmakers  and advocates as &#8220;historic.&#8221;<\/a> Walorski introduced  Matthew Wesaw, who was serving as chair of the tribe at the time.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;I look forward to a productive dialogue for all of us as we examine ways to ensure tax fairness for tribes around the country,&#8221; <a href=https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/indianz\/sets\/examining-the-impact-of-the-tax-code-on-native-american-tribes>Walorski said<\/a> as she welcomed Wesaw to the committee.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nDuring her <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/member\/jackie-walorski\/W000813?q=%7B%22subject%22%3A%22Native+Americans%22%7D>time in Congress<\/a>, Walorski co-sponsored the Indian Health Service Advance Appropriations Act, a bill to fulfill the U.S. government&#8217;s trust and treaty obligations by  funding the <a href=https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/>Indian Health Service<\/a> ahead of time. The current version of the measure, which enjoys bipartisan support, received a <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/07\/28\/house-subcommittee-on-indigenous-peoples-of-the-united-states-legislative-hearing-on-h-r-5549\/>key hearing in the U.S. House of Representatives  last week<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nWalorski also was a backer of the <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/IndianGaming\/2019\/01\/29\/tribal-labor-sovereignty-act-rears-its-c.asp>Tribal Labor Sovereignty Act<\/a>. The bill, which remains <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2018\/04\/17\/we-will-be-back-vows-leader-of-national.asp>highly controversial among lawmakers<\/a> despite widespread support in Indian Country, treats tribes in the same manner as states and local governments when it comes to federal labor law.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_twitter-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaysMeansCmte\/status\/1554951399301156866\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/profile_images\/1816131091809325056\/qJljVpiM_200x200.jpg\" alt=\"Ways and Means Democrats (@WaysMeansCmte) on X\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaysMeansCmte\/status\/1554951399301156866\">\n\t\t\tWays and Means Democrats (@WaysMeansCmte) on X\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WaysMeansCmte\/status\/1554951399301156866\">\n\t\t\t<p>Today, we are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Rep. The bipartisan legislation would address many of the issues &#8212; such as tribally-issued bonds and tribal employee pension and benefit plans  &#8212; discussed  at the <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/Audio\/2020\/03\/04\/examining_the_impact_of_the_ta.asp>historic hearing two years ago<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nWalorski also supported a measure to place  enforcement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/nagpra\/index.htm\">Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act<\/a>  under the authority of the <a href=https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/a>, a long-time priority of tribes who feel the <a href=https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/>National Park Service<\/a> hasn&#8217;t done enough to protect ancestral remains and cultural property. The Biden administration has <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/01\/31\/full-time-nagpra-investigator-hired-for-first-time-in-decades\/>opened the door  for the change<\/a> as the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a> considers ways to improve NAGPRA.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Her memory will live on not only through her working relationship with our tribal government, but also through the many lives that she helped through her years public service,&#8221; the Pokagan Band said  of Walorski in its statement on Thursday.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nWalorski had represented Indiana&#8217;s 2nd Congressional District since 2013. The district, located in the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indiana%27s_2nd_congressional_district>northern part of the state<\/a> near the Michigan border, includes  part of the <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/IndianGaming\/2016\/11\/23\/pokagon-band-secures-approval-to-restore.asp>Pokagan Reservation<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nWalorski and two of her staff members were working in the district when the crash occurred.  According to the <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ecsonews\/posts\/pfbid02MwdFVmz74wv6TtbLNEkzEMzQXvRYTJL4wGTG2NMQcqu63krzoyU9MKqcN8Fm2KqDl>Elkhart County Sheriff&#8217;s Office<\/a>, Walorski, who was 58,  lost her life along with Zachery Potts, 27, and Emma Thomson, 28.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;It is with great sadness that we share our deepest condolences to the families of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, and her dedicated staff members, Zachary Potts and Emma Thompson,&#8221; the tribe said in the statement.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAccording to the county sheriff,  <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ecsonews\/posts\/pfbid02cM5mxBi16ZxpZvwSaTXk4LrhnptryrEhguMXj67mZNCEswx7raz48yigcSyWz67xl>Potts was driving the vehicle<\/a> carrying  Walorski and Thomson.  He collided with another car driven by  Edith Schmucker, 56, who also died at the scene, the office said.\r\n<P><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/P>\r\nKey members of Congress have issued condolences and tributes to Walorski following her passing.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI am overwhelmed with sadness over the horrific loss of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski and two members of her staff,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/neal.house.gov\">Rep. Richard E. Kevin Brady<\/a> (R-Texas), the highest-ranking Republican on the committee, <a href=https:\/\/gop-waysandmeans.house.gov\/brady-statement-on-passing-of-congresswoman-jackie-walorski\/>said in a statement<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Congresswoman Jackie Walorski was a happy Hoosier who would light up the room with her joy, passion, brilliance, and love of life.
