The <a href=https:\/\/worldlacrosse.sport\/article\/day-seven-update-israel-and-england-first-teams-into-the-quarterfinals\/>victory was the Haudenosaunee Nationals&#8217; fourth win in a row<\/a> at the tournament, which is taking place in Towson, Maryland.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldLax2022\/status\/1544399260220792836>&#8220;UPSET COMPLETE&#8221;<\/a> is how the move by the lower-seeded Haudenosaunee women, ranked 12th coming into to the games, was described on social media by the World Lacrosse organization.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UPSET COMPLETE \ud83d\udea8<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hnwllax?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@hnwllax<\/a> tops Scotland in the first round of the championship bracket.<br><br>The 1\ufe0f\u20e32\ufe0f\u20e3 seed moves on. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/INjIEqy2g7\">pic.twitter.com\/INjIEqy2g7<\/a><\/p>&mdash; 2022 Women&#39;s World Lacrosse Championship (@WorldLax2022) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldLax2022\/status\/1544399260220792836?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 5, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nA day prior, on Monday evening, the Haudenosaunee women sailed to victory against Argentina. But the game was marred by a comment made during the <a href=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-Lo_iMy2gg0>ESPN+ broadcast<\/a> of the matchup.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nWith the Haudenosaunee women far ahead in the third quarter of the game, a member of the ESPN+ broadcast team used the <a href=https:\/\/indiancountrytoday.com\/archive\/circle-the-wagons>offensive phrase &#8220;circle the wagons&#8221;<\/a>  as a way to explain the losing team&#8217;s strategy.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe   comment, coming  about an <a href=https:\/\/www.espn.com\/espnplus\/player\/_\/id\/005aef06-4a2a-4bc5-aa34-1e8527400a50?t=01h00m20s>hour into the matchup<\/a>, has historically been used to portray Native people as being aggressive toward non-Natives, often  implying a sense of unfairness. Native people who were watching the broadcast heard the phrase and felt it was inappropriate.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/pClpD6GZH2\">pic.twitter.com\/pClpD6GZH2<\/a><\/p>&mdash; World Lacrosse (@WorldLacrosse) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldLacrosse\/status\/1544125917949136896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 5, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBy the evening, the World Lacrosse organization issued a statement, saying the broadcaster &#8220;sincerely apologized&#8221; to the Haudenosaunee team for the use of the &#8220;culturally insensitive&#8221; phrase.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;We apologize for the culturally insensitive comment made during today&#8217;s Haudenosaunee vs. Argentina broadcast during the World Lacrosse women&#8217;s championship by a member of the broadcast team,&#8221; <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldLacrosse\/status\/1544125917949136896>the statement<\/a> read. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;The individual has sincerely apologized to the Haudenosaunee team and we are confident the comment was made unintentionally with no malicious intent,&#8221; the organization continued. &#8220;Both the individual and World Lacrosse have incredible respect for Indigenous people and their history and deeply regret any harm caused.&#8221;\r\n<P><\/P><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/P>\r\nThe Haudenosaunee team&#8217;s next game takes place at 2pm Eastern on Wednesday. The women are facing Australia, one of the higher-ranked teams on the world lacrosse circuit.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAssuming the Haudenosaunee women are victorious, they would take on another opponent on Thursday evening. <a href=https:\/\/worldlacrosse.sport\/article\/2022-world-lacrosse-womens-championship-broadcast-information\/>ESPN+ continues to broadcast<\/a> the   tournament, being held  at <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johnny_Unitas_Stadium>Johnny Unitas Stadium  on the campus of Towson University<\/a>  outside of Baltimore, the largest city in  Maryland. \r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe event kicked off on July 29. The <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/HNWlax_\/status\/1542271244703113216>opening ceremony included a well-received  cultural presentation<\/a> by the Haudenosaunee people that also <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/HAU_Nationals\/status\/1543634479562080261>featured other Native performers<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nDepending on the outcome in Maryland,  the Haudenosaunee women will set their sights on their next challenge: the <a href=https:\/\/twg2022.com>World Games<\/a> in Birmingham, Alabama. The top-ranked women&#8217;s teams are due to compete there next week.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div style=\"padding:56.25% 0 0 0;position:relative;\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/723047327?h=b90662db09\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/api\/player.js\"><\/script>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Haudenosaunee Nations:  <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/723047327\">Road to the Olympics<\/a> <\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLooking even further ahead, the  Haudenosaunee Nationals have embarked on what they are calling the <a href=https:\/\/haudenosauneenationals.com\/road-to-the-olympics\/>Road to the Olympics<\/a>. The organization&#8217;s lacrosse teams &#8212; women and men &#8212; are hoping to compete in the  2028  Olympic games that will take place in  Los Angeles, California.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n&#8220;The Haudenosaunee Nationals intend on participating under our own flag as a world-recognized Nation State,&#8221; the organization proclaims.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n The teams are <a href=https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/haudenosaunee-nationals-olympics>raising $150,000 on one funding site<\/a> to make their dreams come true. Additional fundraising efforts are also underway, with the goal of  reaching $600,000.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe Haudenosaunee Nationals are sanctioned by the leadership of the Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, and Tuscarora nations in the United States and Canada.
