A giant among us has passed. Ernie’s legacy is one of resilience, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the Native community.

Ernie was larger than life both literally and figuratively. His life’s work was dedicated to advocating for Native rights and improving the lives of indigenous people across the United States.

Ernie’s commitment to justice, equity, and the well-being of Native peoples was matched only by his compassion, warmth and generosity. Those who knew him spoke of his humility and deep sense of responsibility. He was a father figure, a mentor, a protector, and a friend, always willing to lend an ear or a hand to those in need. Ernie understood the need and the power of building community and he worked to create an environment where Native leadership could thrive.

His leadership was instrumental in advancing the rights of Native nations. Together with tribal leaders across the country, he fought for gaming rights, healthcare, education, and the protection of sovereignty and Native lands. His ability to bring together tribes to unite for a common cause made him a revered figure in the Native American community and a respected voice in Washington, D.C. He worked to ensure Indigenous voices were heard and valued in the halls of power.

He leaves behind a world richer for his contributions and Indian Country will forever be grateful for his tireless advocacy. His spirit will live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.

Brother, your enormous heart and soul will be missed.

The Native American Caucus of the California Democratic Party
Mary Ann Andreas, Chair
Joely Proudfit, First Vice Chair
Erica Pinto, Second Vice Chair
Nicole Lim, Treasurer
Daniel Salgado, Secretary
Board Members: Mary Ellen Early, Andrew Maisel, Faith Morreo, Chad Gordon, Matthew Franklin

“Ernie was larger than life both literally and figuratively,” the Native American Caucus said.
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

67,1,14
38,94,1480,3755,6797
post-243214","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-indian-gaming","category-national","category-politics","tag-california","tag-democrats","tag-ernie-stevens","tag-iga","tag-obituary","no-wpautop
["GET
