Catherine Cortez Masto<\/a> (D-Nevada), <a href=https:\/\/www.tester.senate.gov\/>Sen. Jon Tester<\/a> (D-Montana) and <a href=https:\/\/www.murkowski.senate.gov\/>Sen. Lisa Murkowski<\/a> (R-Alaska) also expressed concerns about the apparent lack of progress in implementing another law.  <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/09\/24\/savannas-act-s-227-116th-congress-mmiw\/>Savanna\u2019s Act<\/a> was named in memory of  <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2018\/02\/02\/defendant-sentenced-for-kidnapping-and-m.asp>Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind<\/a>,  a 22-year-old Spirit Lake Nation citizen  whose  disappearance and  murder in 2017 helped draw attention to the crisis.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;Similarly, under Savanna\u2019s Act, the creation of regionally appropriate response guidelines to cases of missing or murdered Native people should have already be implemented by U.S. Attorneys, yet Tribes on the ground have not received progress updates with any concrete information,&#8221;\r\nthe <a href=https:\/\/www.cortezmasto.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/during-mmiw-week-of-action-cortez-masto-pushes-administration-to-implement-her-bipartisan-laws-to-protect-native-women>three lawmakers stated<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=row>\r\n<div class=col-10>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-pdfemb-pdf-embedder-viewer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/04\/senate050222.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\" data-toolbar=\"both\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"on\">senate050222<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe virtual event on Thursday should help answer some questions about the Not Invisible Act and Savanna\u2019s Act. According to  the  social media post,   Haaland   plans to discuss ongoing efforts at the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a> to address cases of missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives.  \r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAn <a href=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CdHCJRjOm1S\/>email sent by the department<\/a>  about the event noted that  Haaland plans to  &#8220;make an important announcement<\/a> in connection with the Biden administration&#8217;s efforts on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAt the event, Haaland will be joined by two tribal leaders: <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/presfawnsharp>President Fawn Sharp<\/a> of the <a href=https:\/\/www.ncai.org\/>National Congress of American Indians<\/a> and Chairwoman Whitney Gravelle of the <a href=https:\/\/www.baymills.org\/>Bay Mills Indian Community<\/a>.\r\nAlso participating is <a href=https:\/\/www.niwrc.org\/staff\/lucy-rain-simpson>Lucy Rain Simpson<\/a>, who serves as executive director of the <a href=https:\/\/www.niwrc.org>National Indigenous Women&#8217;s Resources<\/a> (NIWRC).\r\n<P><\/P><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nNIWRC hosted an <a href=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=YNmvbocWsJc>national briefing on Friday<\/a> as part of the organization&#8217;s efforts to address missing and murdered Indigenous women, or MMIW. The event helped launch the <a href=https:\/\/www.niwrc.org\/mmiwnatlweek22>2022 National Week of Action for MMIW<\/a>, with implementation of the Not Invisible Act and Savanna\u2019s Act among the top priorities for Native women and their advocates.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;The crisis of MMIW reflects the intersection of domestic and dating violence, sexual assault, sex trafficking  and other related crimes,&#8221;  <a href=https:\/\/www.niwrc.org\/staff\/kerri-colfer>NIWRC Senior Native Affairs Advisor Kerri Colfer<\/a> said during the briefing.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;In other words, it&#8217;s the culmination of the spectrum of violence  Indigenous women face every day,&#8221; said Colfer, who is Tlingit. &#8220;These crimes are the result of colonization and the long history of failed government policies, programs, and laws that create dangerous conditions and leave Indigenous women unprotected.&#8221;\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSecretary Haaland&#8217;s event will be webcast at <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/live>doi.gov\/live<\/a>.
