A request had been made by the tribe\u2019s judicial system to clarify tribal codes related to who should be allowed to marry and divorce.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAfter learning of the council\u2019s decision, LaMere decided to act, <a href=https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@hucpiga\/video\/7084785562040798506>posting a video on TikTok<\/a> that has since garnered more than 923,000 views. Screenshot @hucpiga<\/figcaption><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLaMere said some council members used the term \u201c<em>shongay<\/em>,\u201d a Ho-Chunk word that she said once meant \u201cqueer\u201d but that today is used as a slur.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe council members that helped to vote to ban gay marriage said that we need to move those <em>shongays<\/em> outside of our tribe because they do not belong and they do not have any purpose here,\u201d LaMere said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLaMere&#8217;s video encouraged Winnebago tribal leaders to rescind their March 24 decision affecting same-sex marriage on the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Winnebago_Reservation>Winnebago Reservation<\/a> in northeast Nebraska.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nOn Monday, the council voted overwhelmingly to recognize same-sex marriage and divorce.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThere was a real humbleness of the leadership to apologize to the relatives that they had offended,\u201d said Winnebago Chairwoman Victoria Kitcheyan, speaking Tuesday on the <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/officialbigvoiceradio>tribe\u2019s radio station The Big Voice, KWTN 109.9 FM<\/a>. \u201cI need to hold my team accountable so we did that that day by revisiting that discussion.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_www-facebook-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WinnebagoTwoSpiritPride\/posts\/288430456793013\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/plugins\/content-cards\/skins\/default\/content-cards-placeholder.png\" alt=\"Winnebago Two-Spirit\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WinnebagoTwoSpiritPride\/posts\/288430456793013\">\n\t\t\tWinnebago Two-Spirit\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WinnebagoTwoSpiritPride\/posts\/288430456793013\">\n\t\t\t<p>The Winnebago Tribe has passed same sex marriage! Bass said people don\u2019t choose to be gay. They just are.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd Bass said he worried the council\u2019s decision may have harmed the tribe\u2019s reputation as a national leader in tribal economic development.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSo on Monday, he attended the council\u2019s meeting, where he was asked to speak.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI was caught off guard, but I knew that it was time to speak up and speak out,\u201d he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\n\r\nHe shared his story and talked about his own role as a productive and caring member of his tribe and asked the council members why some of them felt he shouldn\u2019t be able to marry the person he loves.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe\u2019re just like them,\u201d Bass said. \u201cWhy shouldn\u2019t we have the same rights that they have?\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nFor their part, LaMere said he is happy the council rescinded its earlier resolution.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLaMere said their tribe once held great respect for its two-spirit relatives, even allowing them to become leaders and healers.
