Mike Rounds (R-South Dakota) and John Thune (R-South Dakota) recently introduced legislation [<a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/senate-bill\/4715>S.4715<\/a>] to create a Congressional Charter for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NAIV-National-American-Indian-Veterans-311444758503\/\">National American Indian Veterans<\/a> (NAIV).  \r\n<P><\/P>\r\nHeadquartered in South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Reservation, the NAIV is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to advocating for tribal veterans. Originally started in 2004, today the NAIV serves the needs of Native veterans in all 50 states.\r\n <p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe are grateful to our Native veterans for their service to our country,\u201d said Rounds. \u201cThe NAIV helps make certain the unique needs of our Native veterans are being met. Our legislation will help strengthen the NAIV\u2019s ability to provide one-of-a-kind assistance to our Native veterans as we seek ways to provide them with the care they\u2019ve earned and deserve.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cNative American veterans have served our state and our country with honor in the U.S. military,\u201d said Thune. \u201cI am glad to join Senator Rounds in introducing this resolution to give further voice to the sometimes unique needs and priorities of Native American veterans.\u201d\r\n <p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThis bill is very important to American Indians,\u201d said Don Loudner, a Native vet, enrolled member of the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe and National Commander of the NAIV. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t ask for any money. It only asks that the Congress recognize the sacrifices of generations of American Indians who have answered the nation\u2019s call and fought in every war since the Revolution.\u201d\r\n <p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nA congressional charter is a law passed by Congress that recognizes the mission and authority of a group or organization. The NAIV serves the needs and interests of Native veterans in collaboration with its national leadership and 14 regional offices throughout the state. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to the VA, in 2020 there are more than 140,000 Native veterans in the United States. While Congressional Charters have been granted to Italian-American, Polish-American and Catholic-American veterans groups, as of today, no Native veterans\u2019 organization has received a Congressional Charter.\r\n <p><\/p>\r\nAdditional cosponsors include Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) and U.S. Sens.
