I can\u2019t even tell you if I spelled it right in this sentence. What does the word mean?<p><\/p>\r\nThe best way to explain it is that it is more of an emotion than a word. For instance: A Lakota woman sees a young child who is really cute and she says, \u201cI just want to <em>ahhkahneeah<\/em> him.\u201d <p><\/p>\r\nShe is saying that she would just like to hug him or squeeze his cheeks or words to that affect. <p><\/p>\r\nWhen I was a child at the Indian boarding school we would say \u201c<em>Ookh<\/em>.\u201d It is probably a derivation of a Lakota word. It had many meanings to us as boys. Photo courtesy <a href=https:\/\/www.nativesunnews.today\/>Native Sun News Today<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nWhenever we walked by a bunch of Lakota girls on the \u201cgirl\u2019s side\u201d of the Mission we would do something stupid just to hear them say, \u201cYaaaahh.\u201d<p><\/p>\r\nA young lady was riding with her mother as they drove into Rapid City from Pine Ridge. As they drove by the Waste Department she asked her mother, \u201cMom, why does it say <em>Waste<\/em> on all of those trucks?\u201d Of course she meant Waste in the Lakota sense which is pronounced \u201c<em>Washtay<\/em>.\u201d<p><\/p>\r\n<em>Washtay<\/em> if usually preceded with Lila Washtay which means very good. <p><\/p>\r\nWhich reminds us of the story of a Catholic priest new to the reservation driving past a Lakota woman hanging clothes out to dry. He gets out of his car, approaches the woman and says, \u201cWhat a beautiful day.\u201d The lady replies, \u201c<em>Lila washtay<\/em>.\u201d The priest responds, \u201cAnd its Lily\u2019s Wash Day.\u201d<p><\/p>\r\nThe boys at the boarding schools always had their pet names for their teachers. The notorious Father Edwards was always referred to as \u201cEddie Boy\u201d behind his back. And that is how the Catholic Church attempted to destroy a language.<p><\/p>\r\nThere is talk about a \u201creconciliation\u201d between the Catholic Church and its former students. The talk is coming from the Church not the students.<p><\/p>\r\nWhen I wrote \u201c<a href=https:\/\/amzn.to\/3zv08fM>Children Left Behind<\/a>\u201d it was originally called \u201cThe Aboriginal Sin.\u201d As I said, I was blackballed and called a liar by the priests and nuns at the Holy Rosary Indian Mission, now called Red Cloud Indian School. \r\n<P><\/P>\r\nDo you think I will ever be invited to attend or to speak at any of the so-called \u201creconciliation\u201d meetings? I doubt it. I busted their little, reverend bubble and then the walls came down.<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/p>\r\nSorry to say, but I would not attend if I was invited. The Christian Churches destroyed the lives of more Lakota boys and girls than they will ever know and now they are talking about \u201creconciliation?\u201d \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nTo what end? I don\u2019t want to hear them say \u201cWe\u2019re sorry.\u201d \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nI want them to preach from their pulpits around the world every Sunday about how they tried to destroy a people. Tell the world and your congregations about your sins because we Lakota Oyate already know them.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<HR><EM>Tim Giago is an Oglala Lakota.
