But in acknowledging their past work with the artist more   commonly known as \u201cBunky,\u201d  the organizations are taking a stand in light of the nature of the criminal case, which involves abuse against a child.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/collegefund.org\/>American Indian College Fund<\/a>, headquartered in Colorado, was one of the first to make a public statement once news of the charge became more widely known over the weekend.  A statement on Monday afternoon came after <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/02\/07\/prominent-indian-country-artist-facing-criminal-charge\/>Indianz.Com published an initial write-up of the case<\/a> earlier in the day.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cLike you, the College Fund has learned about the allegations against Bunky Echo-Hawk, a Native artist we have worked with in the past,\u201d a <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/collegefund\/status\/1490767332913795072>post on social media<\/a> read. \u201cWe will be following the legal proceedings as they unfold.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Like you, the College Fund has learned about the allegations against Bunky Echo-Hawk, a Native artist we have worked with in the past. We will be following the legal proceedings as they unfold.<\/p>&mdash; The College Fund (@collegefund) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/collegefund\/status\/1490767332913795072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 7, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nIn 2019, Echo-Hawk   <a href=https:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:CPpkIpROmH8J:https:\/\/blog.pendleton-usa.com\/2019\/04\/19\/bunky-echo-hawks-pathway-blanket-for-the-college-fund\/+&#038;cd=1&#038;hl=en&#038;ct=clnk&#038;gl=us&#038;client=safari>designed a \u201cPathway\u201d blanket for Pendleton<\/a>, a non-Indian company that said the proceeds would help  the  College Fund  provide  scholarships for American Indian and Alaska Native youth.  The <a href=https:\/\/blog.pendleton-usa.com\/2019\/04\/19\/bunky-echo-hawks-pathway-blanket-for-the-college-fund\/>product page is no longer available on Pendelton.Com<\/a> and a video featuring the artist has since been <a href=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ODU-8MQCHCo>set to private on YouTube<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.uihi.org\/>Urban Indian Health Institute<\/a> also  had worked with Echo-Hawk. The organization, based in Washington,  said it was \u201cremoving any materials made in collaboration with him or featuring his art.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cWe have worked tirelessly to address sexual violence against women and girls, and we always stand firmly with survivors,\u201d a <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheUIHI\/status\/1490842674106179588>social media post<\/a> later on Monday read.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.uihi.org\/about\/staff\/>organization&#8217;s leadership<\/a> includes a member of the <a href=https:\/\/echo-hawk.com>prominent and large Echo-Hawk family<\/a>, whose work <a href=https:\/\/echo-hawk.com\/?page_id=7>spans art, activism, law and politics<\/a>. \r\nAbigail Echo-Hawk reaffirmed her sentiments about the case   on Monday as well.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI believe and stand with victims,\u201d Echo-Hawk, who serves as executive vice president of the urban Indian health advocacy group, wrote in a <a href=\r\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/echohawkd3\/status\/1490765982171680775>post on one of her personal social media accounts<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">(TW) Trigger Warning:<br><br>The last few days have been so upsetting and triggering for many of us. Please connect with support services if you are struggling in this time. We are praying for healing for all survivors of abuse. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9LKaQh295T\">pic.twitter.com\/9LKaQh295T<\/a><\/p>&mdash; IllumiNative (@IllumiNative) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IllumiNative\/status\/1491090456100601856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nOn Tuesday, another organization that arose out of the efforts of the Echo-Hawk family weighed in with a statement in support of  \u201csupporting survivors of violence and abuse.\u201d <a href=https:\/\/illuminatives.org\/>IllumiNative<\/a> indicated it had recently learned of the criminal case.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe have become aware of the charges filed against Bunky Echo-Hawk and we have taken actions to ensure he will not be involved with the organization, or affiliated projects, in the future,\u201d the <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/_IllumiNatives\/status\/1491090456100601856>statement posted on social media<\/a> read.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe non-profit IllumiNative, which has gained nationwide acclaim for its work on issues such as racist mascots and representation of Native peoples in film, media and television, is led by Crystal Echohawk. On behalf of her relative, she <a href=https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/help-with-funeral-expenses-healing-recovery>created the GoFundMe<\/a> that raised over $163,000 in the wake of a fatal accident that took the life of a young family member.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cAt this time, we are asking Bunky&#8217;s many relatives, friends and supporters across Indian Country to support him and his family,\u201d Crystal wrote   in the successful solicitation, a copy of which was  <a href=https:\/\/www.monah.org\/new-blog\/2021\/10\/20\/help-with-funeral-expenses-healing-amp-recovery-fundraiser-created-by-crystal-echohawk>posted by the Museum of Native American History<\/a> in Arkansas, where the artist&#8217;s work has been featured.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/P>\r\nDespite the disclosures,  other entities that have worked with Echo-Hawk or have ties to his large family remained silent about the criminal matter. The Nike multinational corporation, where the artist had been a designer for the  <a href=https:\/\/www.nike.com\/n7-native-american-indigenous-heritage>N7 Collection geared toward Native people<\/a>, is among those facing pressure on social media to make a statement in support of survivors.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=https:\/\/ndncollective.org\/>NDN Collective<\/a>, where <a href=https:\/\/ndncollective.org\/people\/crystal-echo-hawk\/>Crystal Echo Hawk serves as president of the board<\/a> and which frequently <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ndncol\/posts\/3125297651070778>touts  IllumiNative&#8217;s efforts<\/a>, hasn&#8217;t gone public either as of Tuesday afternoon. The growing non-profit, headquartered in South Dakota, had encouraged donations to the GoFundMe, according to a      <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ndncol\/posts\/3047688938831650\/>post  on social media that no longer appears to be accessible<\/a>. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/pawneenation.org>Pawnee Nation<\/a> is also being urged to go public  by some of its citizens. Echo-Hawk&#8217;s father is  Walter Echo-Hawk Sr., who currently serves as the tribe&#8217;s president. The elder Echo-Hawk is a  <a href=https:\/\/www.narf.org\/narf-bids-farewell-to-a-true-modern-day-warrior-walter-echo-hawk-jr\/>well-known Indian law and policy advocate<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cHenry Ford Cummings was my grandfather who fought world wars for your rights to exist,\u201d one Pawnee citizen wrote in reference to her <a href=https:\/\/pawneenation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/2010-04-April-2010-for-Web.pdf>late ancestor<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n \u201cHe would be proud as I speak up on your silence,\u201d the comment on a <a href=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CYripMQpQWU\/>tribal social media post<\/a> asserted.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_indianz-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/02\/07\/prominent-indian-country-artist-facing-criminal-charge\/\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/25\/pawneecountycourthouse-scaled-2.jpg\" alt=\"Prominent Indian Country artist facing criminal charge\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/02\/07\/prominent-indian-country-artist-facing-criminal-charge\/\">\n\t\t\tProminent Indian Country artist facing criminal charge\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2022\/02\/07\/prominent-indian-country-artist-facing-criminal-charge\/\">\n\t\t\t<p>A prominent Indian Country artist has been charged in connection with an incident involving a minor.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/favicon.ico\" alt=\"Indianz.Com\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tIndianz.Com\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n Echo-Hawk Jr.   is facing one felony county of <a href=https:\/\/jpcannonlawfirm.com\/sex-crimes\/lewd-act-with-child\/>lewd acts with a child under 16<\/a>. The crime is punishable by a maximum sentence of life in prison. A person convicted of the crime must also <a href=https:\/\/www.lawfirmofoklahoma.com\/practice-areas\/lewd-acts>register as a sex offender<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe charge stems from an investigation that took place in late 2021, according to an examination of records in  Echo-Hawk&#8217;s case and that of a separate custody case  involving a minor.  Documents in the latter case  disclose allegations of domestic violence within Echo-Hawk&#8217;s  home in Pawnee, Oklahoma. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe domestic   violence allegation was made by a parent of the minor on September 17. Based on the representation, a judge in <a href=https:\/\/www.oscn.net\/courts\/pawnee>Pawnee County District Court<\/a> issued an \u201cemergency temporary custody order\u201d in favor of the parent who made the request that same day.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nThe parent followed up about a  month later with more serious allegations. In a motion to secure permanent custody, revelations of child sexual abuse against Echo-Hawk were reported to the court.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to  an October 12  filing made by the parent, the minor reported  being molested by Echo-Hawk when the child was &#8220;9 years of age.&#8221; The parent also disclosed incidents of self-harm and physical abuse.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=row><div class=col-md-10>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/08\/CC21092900000001.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\" data-toolbar=\"both\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"on\">CC21092900000001<\/a>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn between the two filings, attorneys with connections to the Echo-Hawk family entered the case on behalf of the other parent of the minor child. The <a href=http:\/\/pipestemlaw.com>Pipestem law firm is led by named partners<\/a> Wilson Pipestem and Mary Kathryn Nagle.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nPipestem, a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.omtribe.org\/>Otoe-Missouria Tribe<\/a>, is a prominent   attorney who played a significant role in the early  research efforts of Illuminative. His work has touched on many Indian law and policy areas, including prevention of violence against women and children in Indian Country.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nNagle, a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.cherokee.org\/>Cherokee Nation<\/a>, is a prominent advocate who serves on the <a href=https:\/\/illuminatives.org\/our-network\/>advisory board for Illuminative<\/a>. Her efforts on violence against women and children in Indian Country has reached the <a href=https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/>U.S. Supreme Court<\/a> as tribes seek to ensure they have the authority to punish all perpetrators, regardless of race, of crime and abuse.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nAccording to the docket in the child custody case, the Pipestem law firm <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/08\/CC21092900000001.pdf\">joined the case on September 29<\/a>, less than two weeks after the grant of emergency temporary custody. The additional allegations of abuse were made in a  court filing two weeks  after that.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAttempts to contact the firm, based in Oklahoma, in the morning and again in the afternoon on Tuesday were initially unsuccessful. She underscored the need for her own leaders to speak out.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n \u201cAs a small tribe from Oklahoma with a big emphasis on the elites, the Pawnee Nation has a responsibility and a duty to its alleged most precious assets: our womxn, children, Two-Spirit and trans relatives who statistics prove are more in danger,\u201d said White Eagle.  \u201cThe tribe&#8217;s lack of support for the victim and silence around the issue speaks to the idea of a cover.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nWhite Eagle is a leader  with <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NoiseIsPower\/>NOISE<\/a>, which  raises awareness about the crisis of missing and murdered Native relatives. The organization is based in Oklahoma.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cAs vice chair of an organization that educates, creates safety and advocates for the protection of our marginalized, it is also my duty to use what platform I have to bring this into the light,\u201d  White Eagle added.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThis is not the conduct of a tribe my grandfather taught me to honor,\u201d White Eagle said of the late Henry Ford \u201cHank\u201d Cummings, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in World War II.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nPublic knowledge of the criminal case   arose this weekend, after Echo-Hawk&#8217;s mugshot was posted by a <a href=https:\/\/jailbirds.com\/product\/kay-washington-osage-pawnee-february-2022\/>widely-read publication<\/a> in Oklahoma. A copy of the cover page  of the latest issue appeared on social media on Saturday, generating   interest across Indian Country.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NoiseIsPower\/posts\/450001843447344\" data-width=\"552\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block;\"><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSubsequent to his arrest on the charge on  January 14, Echo-Hawk continued to make posts about his recovery from the October  16, 2021, incident that <a href=https:\/\/alamosanews.com\/article\/alexie-heline-echo-hawk>took  the  life of his 15-year-old daughter<\/a>.  The <a href=https:\/\/nativenewsonline.net\/currents\/bunky-echo-hawk-survives-head-on-car-collision-daughter-succumbs-to-injuries>crash occurred in Colorado<\/a>, as the pair were making their way to Oklahoma for a Pawnee Nation ceremony.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nNot long   after the tragic collision, <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BunkyEchoHawkFineArt\/posts\/436147197876734>Echo-Hawk shared a condolence letter<\/a> sent by President Joe Biden on behalf of himself and First Lady Jill Biden. The post was an indication of the  influence of the Echo-Hawk family throughout law and politics.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAccording to court records, the case against Echo-Hawk is being prosecuted by Pawnee County Assistant District Attorney Jeff S. Jones. He is a former attorney general of the <a href=https:\/\/www.osagenation-nsn.gov\/>Osage Nation<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nEcho-Hawk is being represented by attorneys from the   <a href=https:\/\/www.amalaw.com\/>Atkins Markoff Adler law firm<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe case is <em>State of Oklahoma v.
