2. INDIAN COUNTRY & COVID-19:<\/em><\/h2>\r\nHOUSE DEMOCRATS INTRODUCE UPDATED CORONAVIRUS RELIEF LEGISLATION<\/div>\r\nLast week, House Democrats introduced an updated version<\/a> of the HEROES Act. The House voted and passed the new version on Thursday October 1. The original Act was passed by the House in May and was intended to provide relief to individuals, businesses, and governments from the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The updated version shaves over $1 trillion off the original price tag. Both versions are favorable towards Indian Country and tribal governments.\r\n<\/p>\r\nNegotiations this week stalled between the parties, and it is unlikely that the updated bill will be taken up by Senate Republicans at all. Relief negotiations are unlikely to resume before the election.\r\n

3. POLICY:<\/em><\/h2>\r\nHOUSE WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE CALLS FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO THE NEW MARKETS TAX CREDIT PROGRAM<\/div>\r\nOn September 28, 2020, the House Committee on Ways & Means<\/a> sent a bipartisan letter<\/a> to the U.S. Department of the Treasury Community Development Financial Institutions Fund (CDFI Fund)<\/a> Director Jodie Harris regarding the lack of Indian Country inclusion and parity in the New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) program.\r\n<\/p>\r\nThis action is a direct result of the House Ways & Means Committee\u2019s Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures historic hearing on Examining the Impact of the Tax Code on Native American Tribes<\/a> on March 4, 2020. NAFOA has been a leading advocate on behalf of tribal governments for increased direct allocations for Indian Country. The letter was prompted in part by the latest slight by the Department of Treasury of tribal entities once again receiving no tax credit awards from the multi-billion dollar program. \r\n<\/p>\r\nRead more in NAFOA’s recent broadcast.<\/a>\r\n<\/p>\r\n
