White House won’t ‘predict’ decision on Leonard Peltier<\/div>\r\n

<\/p>\r\nThe White House isn’t shedding light on what President Joe Biden thinks about imprisoned American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier<\/a>.\r\n

<\/P>\r\nPeltier is serving two life terms<\/a> in prison for the murders of two FBI agents<\/a>, a crime he insists he did not commit<\/a>. The incident occurred on the Pine Ridge Reservation<\/a> in South Dakota in June 1975.\r\n

<\/P>\r\nDuring a media briefing on Thursday<\/a>, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about calls for Biden to release Peltier from federal prison. But she didn’t offer any hints as to what the president might be thinking about the case.\r\n

<\/p>\r\n\u201cI don\u2019t have anything to predict for you on that front,\u201d Psaki said.\r\n

White House Press Briefing: Question on Leonard Peltier – January 27, 2022<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n

<\/p>\r\nThe question marked the first time the issue was brought up at a White House briefing since Biden took office a year ago. It came a day after Sen. Brian Schatz<\/a> (D-Hawaii), the chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs<\/a>, asked the president to commute Peltier’s sentence.\r\n

<\/p>\r\n\u201cI commend your administration\u2019s commitment to righting past wrongs in our criminal justice system,\u201d \r\nSchatz wrote in the January 26 letter, which was first reported by The Huffington Post<\/a>. \r\n

<\/P>\r\n\u201cIn continuing that work as you consider recommendations for individuals to receive clemency, I write to urge you to grant a commutation of Leonard Peltier\u2019s sentence,\u201d Schatz told Biden. A copy of the letter was posted by The Huffington Post<\/a>. \r\n
