She purported to educate her audience about issues facing American Indians, often asking for monetary contributions for content about colonization, assimilation and cultural appropriation.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nBut after Native people asked questions about her background, Perera removed   \u201cLakota\u201d and \u201cMohawk\u201d from her <a href=https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@misscorinne86>@misscorinne86 biography on TikTok<\/a>, which had become her largest platform. She also hid her <a href=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/misscorinne86\/>@misscorinne86 account on Instagram<\/a>, making it inaccessible to the general public despite having used it in the past to solicit donations and to drum up business for her <a href=https:\/\/www.corinnericeconsulting.com>\u201cIndigenous-owned\u201d consulting firm<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd in a <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/corinne.oestreich\/posts\/10101877967684833>public post on Facebook<\/a> last week, Perera admitted she was wrong to have claimed affiliations with sovereign tribal nations to which she doesn&#8217;t belong. She blamed the \u201cmistake\u201d  on missteps her family made while  researching the genealogy of \u201cone of my grandfathers.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n \u201cI was young and learning about how to step into indigenous community in the Bay Area and claimed my nations without having enrollment. After  <a href=https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/environment\/2021\/04\/land-back-tribal-nations-sovereignty-treaties-white-supremacy\/>tying her career to Native issues<\/a> and Native life, she said she was going to \u201cstep back\u201d from her very public, though largely <a href=https:\/\/www.culturalsurvival.org\/publications\/cultural-survival-quarterly\/auntie-effect>self-designated \u201cAuntie\u201d persona<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cBeing in the work of education and training, it was never my intention to take space from someone in the work who was enrolled, but to use every connection I have to help those around me,\u201d she wrote in the post.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe explanation, however, wasn&#8217;t satisfactory for those reading it &#8212; in particular, Native women. Many  reacted negatively to Perera&#8217;s statement, with some noting that her platform&#8217;s popularity was tied to her views on  sensitive issues, such as the crisis of <a href=https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/COgu_zahqfd\/>missing and murdered Indigenous people<\/a> and the losses suffered during the genocidal Indian boarding school era.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n \u201cYou have an enormous following and a reach many of us do not have, so I appreciate the education and elevation you have created with your online audience,\u201d a   woman from the <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/THEOGLALANATION>Oglala Sioux Tribe<\/a> wrote on the public post. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cBut it\u2019s hard to not feel like you appropriated from our mothers, grandmother and great grandmothers and that hurts me,\u201d  the person said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cStop making excuses,\u201d wrote another   woman who has founded and led activist groups in Indian Country. \u201cYou lied and we don\u2019t need you to talk your way out of it. She currently goes by \u201cCorinne Grey Cloud\u201d &#8212; having  <a href=https:\/\/www.lakotatimes.com\/articles\/rosebud-wedding-village-backdrop-realistic\/>recently married Greg Grey Cloud<\/a>, who is a citizen of the <a href=http:\/\/www.crowcreekconnections.org\/>Crow Creek Sioux Tribe<\/a>. The couple makes their home on the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rosebud_Indian_Reservation>Rosebud Sioux Reservation<\/a> in South Dakota.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBut for   her \u201cIndigenous-owned\u201d  business, Perera has used  the  \u201cRice\u201d   surname, apparently in an attempt to legitimize her tribal claims. One citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.srmt-nsn.gov\/>St. Regis Mohawk Tribe<\/a> told Indianz.Com that the name was chosen because of its prominence among Mohawk people in the state of New York and in Canada. A second Mohawk citizen made the same assertion in a social media post that questioned Perera&#8217;s tribal affiliation.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIndeed,  Perera  has long been  claiming that her grandfather was Mohawk. She identified herself as  \u201cLakota and Mohawk\u201d in a <a href=https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/native-american-thanksgiving_n_5bf594b5e4b03b230f9df6ad>first-person essay published in The Huffington Post<\/a> ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday in November 2018.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cMy grandfather moved to California from Mohawk territory in the 1950s after he served in Korea, and we have all lived in Sunnyvale ever since,\u201d Perera wrote of the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sunnyvale,_California>Silicon Valley city   known for its high-technology wealth<\/a>. The piece carried a byline of  \u201cCorinne Oestreich\u201d  &#8212;  <a href=https:\/\/theoestreichs.blogspot.com>Oestreich being the surname of her husband<\/a> at the time.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius:12px\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/7BLi9sQRmvlMannU4sytky?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"232\" frameBorder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\"><\/iframe>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Corinne Oestrich on Real Talk Podcast: <a href=https:\/\/realtalkradiopodcast.com\/podcast\/corinne-oestreich\/>&#8220;My grandfather is Lakota and Mohawk and moved from Mohawk territory out to California after the Korean War&#8221;<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nYet well  before the  \u201cHuffPost Personal\u201d essay, Perera was making a name for herself among Native people who live in northern California. She <a href=https:\/\/youtu.be\/bHdTfoSABwk>\r\nappeared on Native Voice TV in July 2017<\/a> and was very clear about her background. It was a far cry from the uncertainties she portrayed in her more recent Facebook post about her family&#8217;s research journey.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cI am Oglala Lakota and Blackfoot, but I grew up here in the Sunnyvale \/ Bay Area of California,\u201d she said when asked by the host of <a href=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCK419hOXhS6-W7P5xTGN_DA>Native Voice TV<\/a> to detail  her  \u201ctribal affiliation.\u201d \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nA photo of Perera wearing what was described as a <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jingle_dress>jingle dress<\/a> is then shown on screen. She said she wore the Native regalia to a \u201cHeritage Day\u201d presentation at a school where she was employed. According to public records, she worked for the Sunnyvale School District at the time.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nWhen asked about the origins of her supposed Lakota family, Perera was just as confident with her answer.   \u201cFrom Pine Ridge,\u201d she quickly replied, referring to the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pine_Ridge_Indian_Reservation>Pine Ridge Reservation<\/a>, the home of the  <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/THEOGLALANATION>Oglala Sioux Tribe<\/a>. She did not elaborate on the \u201cBlackfoot\u201d affiliation she was claiming, nor did the <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Native-Voice-TV-166633553368033\/>Native Voice TV<\/a> host inquire.\r\n<P><\/P><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nDuring the Native Voice TV show, Perera shared her experiences of working for PowWows.Com. She has been writing for the popular website since at least 2014, according to an  <a href=https:\/\/realtalkradiopodcast.com\/podcast\/corinne-oestreich\/>episode of the Real Talk Podcast<\/a> that aired in early February 2019.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBut in the  more recent days since Native people raised questions about Perera, <a href=https:\/\/www.powwows.com\/search.php?cx=partner-pub-4335967908116752%3A4156ssa36cb&#038;cof=FORID%3A10&#038;ie=ISO-8859-1&#038;q=corinne>all references to her work on PowWows.Com have been removed<\/a>. Pages tagged with   her various names &#8212;  \u201cCorinne Rice,\u201d \u201cCorinne Oestrich\u201d and \u201cCorinne Grey Cloud\u201d &#8212; are no longer accessible on the site, which is owned and operated by <a href=https:\/\/www.mediavine.com\/building-community-podcast-transcript\/>Paul Gowder<\/a>, a non-Native man who lives in South Carolina. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nStill, traces of Perera&#8217;s past   can be found through <a href=https:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:tuoIM_JF2kQJ:https:\/\/www.powwows.com\/native-voice-features-powwows-com-writer-corinne-oestreich\/+&#038;cd=1&#038;hl=en&#038;ct=clnk&#038;gl=us&#038;client=safari>cached versions of some pages on PowWows.Com<\/a> &#8212; including a <a href=https:\/\/www.powwows.com\/native-voice-features-powwows-com-writer-corinne-oestreich\/>now-deleted post<\/a> that promoted her 2017 appearance on Native Voice TV. Tubbs and John M. Perera. Tubbs and Perera were  married in California    a year prior, according to public records. They <a href=https:\/\/theoestreichs.blogspot.com\/2015\/01\/i-am-child-of-divorcetwice.html>later divorced<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n  Perera  has   identified her paternal grandfather as Aleysworth Dudley Perera. In  the Spring 2015 issue of   <a href=https:\/\/us1.campaign-archive.com\/?u=372e26a4ff77bd8dbaf74127f&#038;id=a1f580ee99&#038;e=%5BUNIQID%5D#War%20and%20Military%20News>The Indo Project Newsletter<\/a>, she said her  \u201copa\u201d &#8212; a word  meaning grandfather in the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indonesian_language>Indonesian language<\/a> &#8212;  was  born  in Yogyakarta, Indonesia,  in 1930.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to public records, Perera&#8217;s maternal grandfather is John P. Tubbs. He  was born around 1936   in Pennsylvania and later moved to the Bay Area of California, as stated repeatedly by his granddaughter.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nRecords from the U.S. Census Bureau and an <a href=http:\/\/www.thecorryjournal.com\/north_east_news_journal\/obituaries\/article_9f2f95c2-c68f-11e5-aa0c-ebb3170d838e.html>obituary from a family member who lived to the age of 94<\/a>  show Tubbs&#8217;s mother to be \u201cBeulah Rice Tubbs Miles Reed.\u201d The remembrance offers a glimpse into the origins of the \u201cRice\u201d name that Perera utilizes in hopes of bringing herself closer to the Mohawk people.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBut the timeline of her maternal grandfather&#8217;s birth  and his upbringing in Erie, Pennsylvania, doesn&#8217;t entirely match up with her claims of him serving in the <a href=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korean_War>Korean War<\/a>. The geographic locale doesn&#8217;t exactly fit with the claims made by Perera and her biological brother, both of whom  have said they are <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/brothersleadingopenness\/photos\/a.1384738884996020\/1489100857893155\/?type=3>\u201cKahnawake Mohawk\u201d descendants<\/a>.  The <a href=http:\/\/www.kahnawake.com\/>Mohawk Council of Kahnaw\u00e1:ke<\/a>  is a sovereign First Nation located in Quebec, Canada, almost 500 miles from the \u201cMohawk territory\u201d  where their grandfather once lived.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cHe is the most Native out of all of us and he doesn\u2019t know anything,\u201d Perera once said of her grandfather in an <a href=https:\/\/medium.com\/@crystal.martinez.419\/a-seventh-generation-indigenous-woman-reclaims-her-culture-to-make-a-change-in-her-community-7b84cb1c4ea4>interview published in April 2020<\/a>.  \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cHe is fine with not reconnecting with his culture but me and my brother we are not fine without that connection,\u201d she added.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nIncidentally, a  <a href=https:\/\/www.powwows.com\/native-american-activism-conference-at-humboldt-state-university-2015\/>2015 story featuring Perera&#8217;s  younger brother<\/a> has not been removed from PowWows.Com. But there are indications that modifications were made to the page &#8212; the <a href=https:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:XFDp5vBnUHEJ:https:\/\/www.powwows.com\/native-american-activism-conference-at-humboldt-state-university-2015\/+&#038;cd=1&#038;hl=en&#038;ct=clnk&#038;gl=us&#038;client=safari>cached version<\/a> carries one of the \u201cCorinne\u201d bylines while the current version states it was \u201cPosted By PowWow Articles.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAdditionally, the photos at  the top and bottom of the page depict a  person    matching Perera. The  <a href=https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@misscorinne86\/video\/7049483594708012334>most recent post is from  January 4, 2022, though she indicated it was \u201creuploaded\u201d<\/a> because an earlier version was \u201ctaken down\u201d on the platform. In the clip, a visibly pregnant Perera holds what appears to be a firearm in a scene that supposedly represents the way the \u201cUS Gov\u201d has mistreated Native peoples.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nDespite shutting down  engagement on her TikTok account, Perera has been unable to stop reaction to the controversy surrounding her tribal affiliation claims.  Native women have been commenting and sharing their own video responses to her shifting story.
