MSU Photo by Adrian Sanchez-Gonzalez<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Killsback\u2019s two-volume Cheyenne history wins second national book prize<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, December 6, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By Carol Schmidt<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">MSU News Service<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source-links\"><A \r\nhref=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/news\/\">montana.edu\/news<\/A><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/nativeamerican\/directory\/2247568\/leo-killsback\">Leo Killsback<\/a>, associate professor in Montana State University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/nativeamerican\/\">Department of Native American Studies<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/lettersandscience\/index.html\">College of Letters and Science<\/a>, has won the Western History Association\u2019s 2021 Donald Fixico Book Award for his two-volume history of the Cheyenne Nation.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernhistory.org\/fixicoaward\">Fixico Book Award<\/a>, announced at the<strong> <\/strong>61st Western History Association Conference in Portland, Oregon, recognizes innovative work in the field of American Indian and Canadian First Nations\u2019 history.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThis is the second major award this year for Killsback and his two books: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3drZbfC\">A Sacred People: Indigenous Governance, Traditional Leadership and the Warriors of the Cheyenne Nation<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/300CuMt\">A Sovereign People: Indigenous Nationhood, Traditional Law and the Covenants of the Cheyenne Nation<\/a>.\u201d The books were published by Texas Tech University Press in 2020. Earlier this year Killsback received the 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/news\/21309\/\">Stubbendieck Great Plains Distinguished Book Prize<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cCheyenne scholar Leo Killsback provides a remarkable history of the Cheyenne world,\u201d said Fixico Prize selection committee in the award announcement. \u201cHe does so with skill, conviction, and a determination to highlight Cheyenne voices and ways of knowing and being in his work. The books\u2019 origins were in Killsback\u2019s doctoral dissertation, which he then expanded with extensive research. He combed archives at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and the National Anthropological Archives in Maryland. He also interviewed and collaborated with more than 80 elders, teachers and spiritual leaders, resulting in the two award-winning volumes.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt is certainly gratifying to have my research and writing and contributions to the academy honored in this way,\u201d said Killsback, who researches federal Indian law and policy, tribal law, treaty rights, Indigenous rights and sovereignty. He emphasizes traditional concepts of leadership, law, sovereignty and nation building, he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nKillsback is completing two more books on Cheyenne history, oral traditions and language. The first will be published next year with the University of Nebraska Press and is titled, \u201cThe Man Who Cuts the Moon and Other Stories of the Cheyenne People.\u201d  \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cPart of being a professor at a research institution is the mission to research and publish,\u201d he said. \u201cThankfully, it is something that I enjoy.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nKillsback\u2019s path as an award-winning historian seemed set while an undergraduate at MSU. Prior to his graduation in 2003 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in history he won a Rockefeller Brothers Fellowship for Minorities Entering the Teaching Profession. A paper he submitted to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/history\/directory\/1524714\/brett-walker\">Brett Walker<\/a>, MSU Regents Professor of history, on cultural perceptions of non-Indians as well as Indians toward animals was presented to a Future Indigenous Voices Conference. He earned graduate degrees from the University of Arizona in 2010. Then was an assistant professor and associate professor at Arizona State University until 2020.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n He returned to MSU to teach last year with his wife, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/nativeamerican\/directory\/2255269\/cheryl-bennett\">Cheryl Bennett<\/a>, who is also a professor of Native American studies at MSU. Killsback said he is glad to be in Montana near the Northern Cheyenne community  as he continues to be involved in the preservation and resurgence of Cheyenne language and culture.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nKillsback said he was humbled and honored to learn his work had won a second award in just a few months.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI\u2019m happy to represent MSU and Montana in this fashion,\u201d Killsback said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/LeoKillsback\/status\/1437645936650383364\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nFixico, who is of Shawnee, Sac and Fox, Muscogee Creek and Seminole heritage, is Regents and Distinguished Foundation Professor of History at Arizona State University. He is a policy historian and ethnohistorian whose work focuses on American Indians, oral history and the U.S. West. Past recipients of the Fixico Book Award include Philip J. Deloria, Lisa Brooks and Rosalyn R.
