The herds, which tribes relied upon for food and other purposes, were decimated during the colonization of the United States.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe Indian Buffalo Management Act will allow tribal nations to develop and\r\nmaintain buffalo herds on tribal lands to restore treaty obligations and the\r\nbuffalo population itself,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/fernandez.house.gov\">Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez<\/a> (D-New Mexico), the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/subcommittees\/subcommittee-for-indigenous-peoples-of-the-united-states\">House Subcommittee on Indigenous Peoples of the United States<\/a>. \r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cAdditionally this bill will enable the transportation of surplus buffalo from\r\nfederal lands into tribal lands,\u201d Fernandez added.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe measure authorizes $14 million to be spent on the buffalo management program. If the bill becomes law, the money would have to be appropriated by Congress.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe demise of the buffalo was the demise of the American Indian,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/donyoung.house.gov\">Rep.
