It was written in response to an alarming number of auctions of tribal property taking place overseas.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cDue to colonization, it&#8217;s no secret that the exploitation of Native American\r\ncultural items, like human remains sacred objects and other tools, have been looted\r\nand sold by collectors around the world,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/fernandez.house.gov\">Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez<\/a> (D-New Mexico), the sponsor of H.R.2930 and the chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/subcommittees\/subcommittee-for-indigenous-peoples-of-the-united-states\">House Subcommittee on Indigenous Peoples of the United States<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p> \r\nThe STOP Act increases penalties for trafficking in tribal cultural patrimony. It also creates a federal framework to assist in the repatriation of stolen objections to tribal nations.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt is important that we protect cultural items and historic significance to our Indian tribes,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/westerman.house.gov\">Rep.
