Domestic violence, which continues as a tool of colonization, represents a lack of respect for Native peoples.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nNative women and men in the United States experience domestic violence at <a href=\"https:\/\/nij.ojp.gov\/topics\/articles\/violence-against-american-indian-and-alaska-native-women-and-men\">alarming rates<\/a>, with more than four in five Natives having experienced some form of violence in their lifetime and more than half experiencing physical violence by an intimate partner in the past year.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and StrongHearts Native Helpline is committed to increasing awareness about domestic violence in Indian Country. It doesn\u2019t discriminate and includes violence against children, elders, LGBTQ2S individuals. There is also a strong connection between domestic violence and thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nativewomenswilderness.org\/mmiw\"> Missing and Murdered Indigenous women<\/a>.\r\n\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\r\nNative nations in the Lower 48 and Alaska Native Villages continually go underfunded for life saving domestic violence services. Now in its fourth year of operation, StrongHearts has received more than 9,103 phone calls and online chats requesting critically-needed support to deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/strongheartshelpline.org\/abuse\/\">intimate partner violence<\/a>. Of the phone calls, 5,010 were received in 2019 \u2014 a 396.04% increase from 2018.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThis year during the Covid-19 pandemic, conversations focused on domestic violence have attracted international media and public attention. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/un-coronavirus-communications-team\/make-prevention-and-redress-violence-against-women-key-part\">Alarming increases in domestic violence<\/a> have been documented worldwide, due to victims and their abusers being trapped in close quarters while sheltering in place during quarantines. In August, in an effort to help Natives affected by all forms of violence during this uncertain and dangerous time, StrongHearts added sexual violence advocacy to its existing domestic and dating violence outreach services.\r\n\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n  <\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe must continue to heighten public awareness of the issues of<a href=\"https:\/\/strongheartshelpline.org\/domestic-violence-in-indian-country-and-alaska\/\"> violence in Indian Country<\/a>,\u201d says StrongHearts Native Helpline Director Lori Jump (Sault Ste.
