Chief Hoskin signs proclamation and executive order for Domestic Violence Awareness Month<\/a>

Every October our Cherokee Nation work family gathers together to raise awareness for domestic violence and the emotional and physical harm this problem inflicts on its victims, their families, and their communities. \r\n\r\nOn Monday, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. joined tribal leaders to sign a proclamation vowing to be cognizant of domestic violence and to help all of those in the Cherokee Nation who suffer or have suffered at the hands of violence.\r\n\r\nTo strengthen the tribe\u2019s response to domestic violence in our communities, Chief Hoskin also signed an executive order requiring Cherokee Nation employees and job training participants to self-disclose when they are arrested or charged with a crime; if any restraining orders or permanent protective orders are filed against them; and if any outstanding arrest warrants or other disciplinary criteria occurs. \r\n\r\n\u201cThe Cherokee People are counting on us to eliminate domestic violence, to provide care and comfort to the victims and to bring those who will abuse our fellow citizens to justice,\u201d Chief Hoskin said. \u201cThis Executive Order will further us down that path.\u201d\r\n\r\nSecond, Chief Hoskin announced all Cherokee Nation employees will be required to take a mandatory education course on recognizing, preventing and reporting domestic violence.\r\n\r\nHe also announced he is establishing a task force that will, by Dec. 1, 2021, issue a report to his office reviewing existing protocols and policies dedicated to helping domestic violence victims and their families, and strengthen them through recommendations and more effective strategies. \r\n\r\nThe task force will consist of:\r\n\r\nShawna Baker, Cherokee Nation Supreme Court Justice\r\nSara Hill, Cherokee Nation Attorney General \r\nChrissi Nimmo, Cherokee Nation Deputy Attorney General\r\nSandy Crosslin, Cherokee Nation Senior Assistant Attorney General\r\nShannon Buhl, Cherokee Nation Marshal\r\nKim Teehee, Cherokee Nation Delegate to Congress \r\nCandessa Tehee, Cherokee Nation Councilor\r\nShawna Duch, One Fire Executive Director\r\nCherokee Nation First Lady January Hoskin\r\nDebra Proctor, BSN, RN, CPXP\r\nChristy Shero Neuhoff, J.D., M.B.A. ~ Task Force Leader\r\n\r\n\u27a1\ufe0f See the full executive order here: \r\n
