She cannot tell who he is, but he\u2019s kind and makes her laugh and, over time, they become lovers. Ultimately, the girl learns that the stranger is her brother, and they are devastated.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cHe became the MOON who does not shine except in the darkness of night and she became the SUN. Image Courtesy of Dolores Subia BigFoot via Howard Center for Investigative Journalism <\/figcaption><\/div><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBigFoot directs the Native American Programs at the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.ouhsc.edu\/Academic-Departments\/Pediatrics\/Sections\/Developmental-Behavioral-Pediatrics\/Patient-Care\/Center-on-Child-Abuse-and-Neglect\">Center on Child Abuse and Neglect at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center<\/a>. She says some version of this parable has been shared among different tribes for generations.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBarbara Bettelyoun is a citizen of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in South Dakota and the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community of Minnesota with doctorates in child development and child clinical psychology. She runs Buffalo Star People, a South Dakota-based organization specializing in healing historical and childhood traumas in Native communities. She and her husband, Francis, speak nationally on child sexual abuse in Native American communities.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cI don\u2019t think that there\u2019s an Indigenous family who has not been touched by this,\u201d Bettelyoun said, pausing. \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s one; I don\u2019t know of one.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nRape has historically been used as a weapon of war, and that was true when settlers colonized Native American lands. Photo: Isaac Stone Simonelli \/ Howard Center for Investigative Journalism<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nChristian churches and the U.S. government established the schools in the 19th century to forcibly assimilate Native children into American culture. The children were taken from their families and sent \u2014 sometimes thousands of miles away \u2014 to boarding schools, where their long hair was cut short and they weren\u2019t allowed to speak their own languages, wear traditional clothing or practice their religions.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cThe intent was so that when the children came back to their own families and villages, they would be ashamed of being Indigenous,\u201d Bettelyoun said. \u201cThey did that by raping our children and molesting our children and abusing them in horrific ways.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe remains of hundreds of children have already been found on the former grounds of Canada\u2019s largest Indigenous boarding school.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nA <a href=https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22931076\/>2012 study by researchers from the University of Washington<\/a> found that \u201cformer boarding school attendees reported higher rates of current illicit drug use and living with alcohol use disorder, and were significantly more likely to have attempted suicide and experienced suicidal thoughts in their lifetime compared to non-attendees.\u201d \r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe survey of 447 American Indian, Alaska Native and First Nations adults from urban areas who self-identified as LGBT, Two-Spirit or having engaged in same-sex behavior also found that those who were raised by someone who attended boarding schools were more likely to have attempted suicide and experienced suicidal thoughts in their lifetime.\r\n<P><\/P><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nDr. Ren\u00e9e Ornelas, a child abuse pediatric specialist for 30 years who works at Ts\u00e9hootsoo\u00ed Medical Center in Fort Defiance, Arizona, said the Native children sent to boarding schools were physically, sexually and spiritually abused. And the cycle of violence continued when these children, who were never parented, returned home and became parents themselves.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cAll these things that you learn as you\u2019re growing up about how to be safe, nobody ever taught them,\u201d Ornelas said, adding that nine of 10 caregivers who bring their child to her clinic for sexual abuse have been abused themselves.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nIn addition, she said, the modern-day version of boarding schools are now seeing cases of children abusing other children. \u201cWhat we know now is that if you\u2019re growing up in a home where there\u2019s domestic violence, you can learn sexual abuse. You can do that to other children, not for sexual gratification, but to cause humiliation, embarrassment, bullying.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe trauma of childhood sexual abuse doesn\u2019t just create lifelong emotional turmoil, it can lead to long-term physical problems, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, said Debra Kaysen, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nSpeaking of boarding school survivors, Kaysen said, \u201cWhat you get is somebody who is highly traumatized, who\u2019s sent back to a community, often without coping strategies for how to manage their distress.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\r\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2_-Z0PQf7rE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Howard Center for Investigative Journalism: <a href=https:\/\/youtu.be\/2_-Z0PQf7rE>\u2018Little victims everywhere\u2019<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nFrancis Bettelyoun, a member of the Oglala Lak\u021f\u00f3ta and Yankton Sioux Tribe, is an Indigenous liaison to Winona State University in Minnesota. He is descended from boarding school survivors and says he was sexually abused as a child.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cI deal with this every day. I can\u2019t not separate myself from the trauma that happened. My dad was in boarding school, his dad, my grandfather as well, and the two generations before dealt with this, as well,\u201d Francis Bettelyoun said. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cTo get through this, it needs to be recognized that this isn\u2019t something that goes away and will go away through time,\u201d Bettelyoun said. \u201cThis is something that needs to be addressed by those who have done it and those that are part of it now.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<HR><EM>\r\nResearchers Grace Oldham and Rachel Gold contributed to this story.
