Photo by Kevin Hurley \/ Cronkite News<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Sinema urged to support Build Back Better spending plan<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Wednesday, September 22, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"byline\">By Nick Scheske<\/div>\r\n<DIV class=source>Cronkite News<\/DIV>\r\n<DIV class=source-website><A \r\nhref=\"https:\/\/cronkitenews.azpbs.org\/\">cronkitenews.azpbs.org<\/A><\/DIV>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nPHOENIX, Arizona &#8212; Democrats in the Legislature and activists from the <a href=\"https:\/\/workingfamilies.org\">Working Families Party<\/a> met Tuesday at the state Capitol to urge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sinema.senate.gov\">Sen. Kyrsten Sinema<\/a> to take action on President Joe Biden\u2019s Build Back Better agenda.<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/doloreshuerta.org\/doloreshuerta\/\">Dolores Huerta<\/a>, the co-founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ufw.org\/about-us\/our-vision\/\">National Farm Workers Association<\/a>, was one of many who called upon Sinema to vote yes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/build-back-better\/\">Build Back Better<\/a>, which aims to get the American economy back on track after the COVID-19 pandemic by cutting taxes for workers and families; creating clean-energy jobs; and lowering the cost of housing, health care and education for working families. The plan would be funded by raising taxes on wealthy corporations and Americans earning more than $400,000 a year.<p><\/p>\r\nOpponents say the plan would trigger huge increases in inflation and that the plan is far too expensive. Photo by Kevin Hurley \/ Cronkite News)<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSinema has taken heat from fellow Democrats for some of her Senate votes, most notably in March when she gave a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/07\/us\/politics\/kyrsten-sinema-minimum-wage-thumbs-down.html\">thumbs down<\/a> on raising the federal minimum wage to $15. Sinema, who has expressed concern over the size of the plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/sinema-reconciliation-manchin\/2021\/09\/15\/8c583f96-162d-11ec-9589-31ac3173c2e5_story.html\">met in person<\/a> with Biden to discuss it last week.<p><\/p>\r\nTuesday\u2019s rally was the latest in a string of events from activists geared toward Sen. Sinema and Sen. Mark Kelly, who\u2019s also a Democrat.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWhere are you, Senator Sinema, now that we need you?\u201d Huerta asked. \u201cYou have heard the testimonies here of all the people of Arizona that need you right now. People believed in you. They sent you to Congress, and now it is time for you to act, not only for the people of Arizona but for the people of the United States of America.\u201d<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/P>\r\nSinema\u2019s office had no comment.<p><\/p>\r\nState Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Richard_Andrade\">Richard Andrade<\/a>, R-West Phoenix, expressed the desperation that some Arizona workers are feeling. \u201cToday we need her in our time of need. We need her to support the Build Back Better Act \u2026 and the many acts that are going through. So I&#8217;m going to call upon everybody here.
