Amid the ongoing <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, which has <a href=https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/covid19\/2021\/09\/21\/office-of-inspector-general-department-of-health-and-human-services\/>impacted American Indians and Alaska Natives at disproportionate rates<\/a>, the event will be held virtually for the first time.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cPresident Biden and the Administration look forward to hosting a robust and meaningful dialogue with Tribal leaders on key issues, policy initiatives, and goals for Indian Country,\u201d the White House  said in an <a href=https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/who.eop.gov\/announcing-the-2021-white-house-tribal-nations-summit?e=391e21fdf1>email to tribal leaders<\/a> on Wednesday morning.\r\n<P<><\/P>\r\n\u201cThis year we have changed the name from a conference to a summit to reflect the federal government\u2019s Nation-to-Nation relationship with Tribal Nations,\u201d the White House added. \u201cThe Biden-Harris Administration is deeply committed to honoring our trust and treaty responsibilities to federally recognized Tribes and the Summit provides an opportunity for Tribal leaders to engage directly with officials from the highest levels of the Administration.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/09\/22\/president-biden-revives-white-house-tribal-nations-summit\/doi-secretary-deb-haaland-visit-media-availablity-remarks-near\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-16098\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" data-attachment-id=\"16098\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/09\/22\/president-biden-revives-white-house-tribal-nations-summit\/doi-secretary-deb-haaland-visit-media-availablity-remarks-near\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/22\/debhaaland-scaled.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1707\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"Deb Haaland\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Deb Haaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, serves as Secretary of the Interior in the Joe Biden administration, A former member of Congress, Haaland is the first Native person to lead the Department of the Interior. It had taken place during all eight years of the Barack Obama administration, when Biden served as vice president.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cAs President, Biden will build on the efforts of the Obama-Biden Administration, which were instrumental\u200b in rebuilding trust, good faith, and respect for the tribal-federal relationship,\u201d the <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/10\/08\/joe-biden-and-kamala-harris-release-plan-for-tribal-nations\/>Plan for Tribal Nations<\/a> stated. \u201cBiden will ensure tribes have a seat at the table at the highest levels of the federal government and a voice throughout the government.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nDuring Donald Trump&#8217;s only term in office, the summit disappeared, as did the White House Council on Native American Affairs. The former Republican president <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/04\/29\/he-got-demoted-trump-administration-move.asp>resurrected the council<\/a> in his <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/09\/16\/trump-administration-short-on-details-for-white-house-council-on-native-american-affairs\/>final year of office<\/a>, only for it to <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/08\/31\/white-house-council-donald-trump-dead.asp>quickly fall by the wayside<\/a> prior to the 2020 election.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe Trump Administration \u200btook three years to reinstate\u200b the White House Council on Native American Affairs, and still \u200bhas not held\u200b a White House Tribal Nations Conference,\u201d Biden pointed out during the campaign.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nSince winning election as president, Biden has nominated a significant number of Native people to prominent positions in his administration, including Deb Haaland, a citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna who  serves as  <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecDebHaaland>Secretary of the Interior<\/a>. She co-chairs the <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/04\/15\/biden-administration-relaunches-white-house-council-on-native-american-affairs\/>White House Council on Native American Affairs<\/a>, which so far has held   two meetings after <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/04\/15\/biden-administration-relaunches-white-house-council-on-native-american-affairs\/>coming back to life in April<\/a> of this year.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe first was on <a href=https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/23\/readout-of-the-biden-harris-administrations-first-meeting-of-the-white-house-council-on-native-american-affairs\/>April 23<\/a>, when the pledge to hold the tribal summit was formally announced. During the Obama era, the events included the sitting president, the sitting vice president and nearly every cabinet member.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cThe Summit allows Tribal leaders and officials from the highest levels of the Administration to engage in robust and meaningful dialogue on key issues, policy initiatives, and goals for Indian Country,\u201d the <a href=https:\/\/www.ncai.org\/>National Congress of American Indians<\/a> said in a <a href=https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/461c68e4956a\/breaking-senate-passes-12-trillion-bi-partisan-infrastructure-package-5264526?e=bfd380f344>broadcast to members<\/a>. \u201cAdditional details about the Summit are forthcoming.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to the <a href=https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/who.eop.gov\/announcing-the-2021-white-house-tribal-nations-summit?e=391e21fdf1>White House email<\/a>, the deadline to register for the summit is October 22.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe White House Tribal Nations Conference, as it was  previously  known, typically occurred every November or December. The event was hosted at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a> except for a couple of years when it was held off-site due to renovations at Interior.","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mark your calendars.
