Photo by <a href=https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/news\/pressroom\/?id=21456>Kelly Gorham \/ MSU<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">MSU sets American Indian Heritage Day celebration for September 23-24<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Tuesday, September 21, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">MSU News Service<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source-links\"><A \r\nhref=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/news\/\">montana.edu\/news<\/A><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBOZEMAN, Montana &#8212; Montana State University\u2019s annual American Indian Heritage Day celebration, set for September 23-24, will focus on the national work to recover and return the remains of children who died at historical Indian boarding schools to their communities.\r\n <P><\/P>\r\nNicholas Ross-Dick, program manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.montana.edu\/aiansss\/staff.html\">American Indian\/Alaska Native Student Success<\/a>, said \u201cA Voice for the Children\u201d will bring awareness to the work that is being done in North America to return the remains of children to their peoples and communities. The two-day event will include a film, lectures by academics at the forefront of the recovery efforts, an educational exhibit and more.\r\n <P><\/P>\r\n\u201cWe are pleased to bring awareness, education and dialogue surrounding residential and boarding schools and the work and impacts of recovering and returning the remains of children to their peoples,\u201d Ross-Dick said.\r\n <P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/americanindiancouncilofmsu\/posts\/1050837845720929\" data-width=\"552\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block;\"><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nRoss-Dick said the organizing committee selected the topic after this summer\u2019s discovery of hundreds of unmarked graves of children at the sites of former residential schools for Indigenous children in Canada. Ross-Dick said the program will feature <a href=\"http:\/\/www.montana.edu\/lettersandscience\/news\/18658\/\">Marsha Small<\/a>, a doctoral student in MSU\u2019s Individual Interdisciplinary Program and a member of Montana\u2019s Northern Cheyenne Tribe who has been working at the forefront of the issue for several years. \r\n<P><\/P>\r\nSmall\u2019s research, which has been featured in media reports around the world, includes using ground-penetrating radar to find graves at historical Indian boarding schools in the U.S. Her thesis for her master\u2019s degree in Native American Studies, earned at MSU in 2015, was titled \u201cPreservation of Sacred Sites and Sacred Places with Geo-referencing Systems: A Voice for the Children of Chemawa Indian School Cemetery.\u201d  \r\n <P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\r\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zHHVrLRy1oE?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Wyoming Humanities Council: <a href=https:\/\/youtu.be\/zHHVrLRy1oE>Home From School: The Children of Carlisle | Wyoming Connections<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nThe event begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 23, in the Procrastinator Theater with a screening of the film \u201cHome from School: The Children of Carlisle.\u201d Jordan Dresser, producer of the film, will be at the screening. The film focuses on the 2017 trip made by a delegation of Northern Arapaho tribal members who traveled from Wyoming to Pennsylvania to retrieve the remains of three children who died at Carlisle Indian Industrial School in the 1880s.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n Dresser, who led the Carlisle delegation, is currently chairman of the Northern Arapaho Tribe and a 2008 journalism graduate of the University of Wyoming. He has worked as a reporter for the Lincoln Journal Star, the Salt Lake Tribune, the Forum and the Denver Post. He has worked on several films about the ownership of Native antiquities.\r\n <P><\/P>\r\nA panel discussion, \u201cA Deeper Perspective into the Gravity of Finding Indigenous Children,\u201d is scheduled at 10:15 a.m. in the Procrastinator Theater. In addition to Small and Dresser, the panel will include Ann Douglas, an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Nation who is a psychologist with the All Nations Wellness Center in Missoula. The panel will be moderated by Patrick Jeffers, MSU\u2019s academic services coordinator for Native American studies and a descendant of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.\r\n <P><\/P><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nA \u201cPrayer Walk for the Children\u201d is set from noon to 12:45 p.m. around the MSU campus. The walk will begin at the at the east end of the Centennial Mall in front of the American Indian Hall, which will have its grand opening Oct. 16. Participants are encouraged to wear orange, the color of the movement. Fifty orange logo T-shirts will be available at the Procrastinator Theater the day of the event.\r\n <P><\/P>\r\nThe event will conclude with a talking circle and call to action at 1 p.m. in the Procrastinator Theater.\r\n <P><\/P>\r\nAmerican Indian Heritage Day events are free and open to the public.
