But work is being delayed due to scheduling issues.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Due to scheduling changes, those proceedings will be rescheduled to a later date, which will be announced when available,&#8221; the <a href=https:\/\/appropriations.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/cole-releases-fiscal-year-2026-markup-schedule-updated-june-12-2025>committee said in a June 18 update<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe Interior appropriations bill provides funding for the <a href=https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/a> (BIA), the <a href=https:\/\/www.bie.edu\/>Bureau of Indian Education<\/a> (BIE) and the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration (BTFA). It also funds numerous other Indian Country programs at the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a> (DOI), the federal agency with the most trust and trust responsibilities to tribes and their communities.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAdditionally, the Interior appropriations bill funds the <a href=https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/>Indian Health Service<\/a> (IHS), which is part of the <a href=https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/>Department of Health and Human Services<\/a> (HHS).\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_indianz-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/06\/09\/take-that-to-the-bank-lawmakers-work-to-save-indian-health-service-from-setbacks\/\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/10\/robertkennedy.jpg\" alt=\"\u2018Take that to the bank\u2019: Lawmakers work to save Indian Health Service from setbacks\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/06\/09\/take-that-to-the-bank-lawmakers-work-to-save-indian-health-service-from-setbacks\/\">\n\t\t\t\u2018Take that to the bank\u2019: Lawmakers work to save Indian Health Service from setbacks\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/06\/09\/take-that-to-the-bank-lawmakers-work-to-save-indian-health-service-from-setbacks\/\">\n\t\t\t<p>Lawmakers are siding with tribes when it comes to the budget for the Indian Health Service.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/favicon.ico\" alt=\"Indianz.Com\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tIndianz.Com\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIndian Country is closely watching the appropriations process in light of major cuts proposed by President Donald Trump. For example, the BIA would lose about $1 billion in federal funding unless Congress changes course.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe IHS would also suffer a major setback with the loss of advance appropriations. <a href=https:\/\/cole.house.gov\/>Rep. Tom Cole<\/a> (R-Oklahoma), who is the first Native person to chair the House Committee on Appropriations, has <a href=https:\/\/youtu.be\/upSYZOPe_8Q>vowed to preserve the policy<\/a>, which was secured with bipartisan support in Congress and protects the IHS from government shutdowns and other  lapses in funding.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;I can just tell you now, we will be retaining advanced appropriations,&#8221; Cole, who is a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.chickasaw.net\/>Chickasaw Nation<\/a>, said at a <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/06\/09\/take-that-to-the-bank-lawmakers-work-to-save-indian-health-service-from-setbacks\/>June 5 budget hearing for the IHS<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nCole originally scheduled the markup for the Interior appropriations bill on Monday, June 23. From there, it can be considered by the <a href=https:\/\/www.house.gov\/>U.S. House of Representatives<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAs of Monday afternoon, the committee had not released any new information about the Interior appropriations bill, including the actual text of the measure.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nFiscal year 2026 starts on October 1. Despite the deadline, Congress has failed to enact a stand-alone Interior appropriations bill for more than a decade.
