At the time, thousands of white residents besieged what was among the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/07\/chuck-hoskin-cherokee-nation-honors-victims-of-massacre-at-black-wall-street\/\">most successful and affluent Black communities<\/a> in the early 20th century. \r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\r\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OUVztJHTX_Q?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">The Black Wall Street Times: <a href=https:\/\/youtu.be\/OUVztJHTX_Q>Road to Repair<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThree hundred Black people died and more than a thousand homes and businesses were destroyed. On the homelands of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nansemond.gov\">Nansemond Indian Nation<\/a> in Virginia, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Dismal_Swamp\">Great Dismal Swam<\/a>p was a safe space for tribes. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe swamp also became a refuge for Black freedom seekers escaping slavery. Federal officials are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chesapeakebaymagazine.com\/great-dismal-swamp-could-become-virginias-next-national-heritage-area-public-comments-sought\/\">exploring it as a new National Heritage Area<\/a>.
