They are:\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=mx-5>\r\n&#8226; <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/989>S.1989<\/a>, the Native American Language Resource Center Act. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\/news\/press-release\/schatz-young-introduce-bipartisan-bill-support-native-language-schools-and\">bipartisan bill creates the Native American Languages Resource Center<\/a>, whose purpose is to support Native language schools and help them succeed.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8226; <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/1402>S.1402<\/a>, the Durbin Feeling Native American Languages Act. The bill is named in honor of Durbin Feeling, a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.cherokee.org\/>Cherokee Nation<\/a> who <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/05\/24\/chuck-hoskin-cherokee-nation-invests-in-our-language\/\">dedicated his life to preserving the Cherokee language<\/a> before his passing last year at the age of 74. Leaders from American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities said the federal government needs to do more to protect Native languages, especially amid the <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cDuring the worst of the pandemic, we made concentrated efforts to support\r\nour speakers, providing food assistance, telehealth services, support to pay the costs of utilities\r\nand direct elder assistance payments,\u201d   <a href=https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckHoskin_Jr>Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr.<\/a> of the <a href=https:\/\/www.cherokee.org\/>Cherokee Nation<\/a> stated in <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/26\/hoskin052621.pdf>written testimony<\/a>.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cDespite these efforts, we lost more than 50 fluent speakers to COVID-19,\u201d  Hoskin said. \u201cEvery life is\r\nirreplaceable, but when you lose a speaker, you are losing more than a person\u2014you are losing\r\na national treasure.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nThe Biden administration confirmed how the coronavirus has taken a toll  on Native languages during the hearing. But a government official  did not   outright support, or oppose, S.1989 or S.1402.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nAccording to Michelle Sauve of the <a href=https:\/\/www.acf.hhs.gov\/ana>Administration for Native Americans<\/a>,   the program created by the   Native American Language Resource Center Act would be housed at the <a href=https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/>Department of Education<\/a>, which did not provide a witness for the hearing.
