Laws and policies were written without considering Indigenous communities challenges or their strengths,\u201d said Haaland, who is the first Native person to lead the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a>, the federal agency with the most trust and treaty responsibilities in Indian Country.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe&#8217;re working hard to undo so many consequences of these actions,\u201d said Haaland, a citizen of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lagunapueblo-nsn.gov\/\">Pueblo of Laguna<\/a>. \u201cToday, and every day, we break barriers to those institutions and systems that were designed to keep us out.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This totem carries the hopes of everyone who has laid hands on it.
